Christina Ricci Lizzi Borden Role Sparks Discussion (PHOTO)

Christina Ricci is making waves in the new poster for the upcoming Lizzie Borden film in which she portrays the infamous axe murderer.

In the late 1800s, Borden was tried and acquitted for murdering her father and stepmother by axe in Fall River, Massachusetts in what is still one of the most notorious crimes of all time.

Today, director Nick Gomez is offering a big-screen take of the Lizzie Borden story, with Ricci in the lead role. "Lizzie Borden Took an Ax" is set to air on Lifetime in January 25, 2014.

On Monday, Lifetime released the first promotion for the upcoming feature. The poster reveals Ricci clad in what looks like a white night gown bloodied at the bottom. The actress is seen climbing steps glancing back at the camera with a bloodied ax in tow.

Upon its release, the internet was ablaze with reactions to the powerful image.

Jennifer posted, "Whoa. 1st time I've ever wanted to see a Lifetime movie. Christina Ricci in 'Lizzie Borden Took an Ax.'"

"Excited for this one, should be good," Twitter user Erin added.

Matt wrote, "I just heard about the Lizzie Borden movie starring Christina Ricci @lifetimetv – You are so good to us!"

Meanwhile, the official description for the made-for-television movies reads, "On a scorching, hot summer day in 1962 in Fall River, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden (Ricci) returns home to the house she shares with her father, Andrew, and stepmother Abby and sister Emma. But, unlike any normal day, Lizzie encounters the bloody scene of her parents violently murdered. Police quickly question multiple suspects in town, but evidence keeps pointing back to the Borden's youngest daughter, Lizzie, the seemingly wholesome Sunday school teacher, as the prime suspect."

Lifetime's official synopsis goes on to explain that Borden's lawyer, Andrew Jennings (portrayed by Billy Campbell) defends his client by claiming that it would be impossible for a woman to commit such a brutal crime on her family with an ax, according to Entertainment Weekly

Nevertheless, the murder trial gained international attention, sparking arguments over Borden's innocence that still continue to rage on today.

"Lizzie Borden Took an Ax" also stars Clea Du Vall. It will air on Lifetime Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. EST.
