Jackie Turner summed up her unhappy childhood without saying a word when she was asked about pleasant memories growing up. She never met her mom, and her dad abused her.

Now a junior at William Jessup University near Sacramento, Calif. she seems to be doing well with good grades and friends. However, every year ends at a low point with Christmas because she has no family to go home to. So this year, she decided to hire one.

She put up a Craigslist post saying, "I want to rent a mom and dad."

For $8 an hour, she would pay for the company of a kind older couple who could act as the loving parents she never had.

Turner received dozens of responses, both from parents who wanted to host her, for free, and from lonely young people who wanted the same as her.

"People are hurting and broken," Turner says in the video below. "And we need to be loving each other."

To do something about all the hurt she saw, she held a meeting to pair the young people with the willing parents. And found a match for herself in a woman who worked at her school's student services.
