Concert Review: Amy and Vince's "Simply Christmas"

Amy Grant and husband Vince Gill worked their magic through this holiday season. The duo appeared on TV programs such as Nick at Nite Christmas Special, CNN's Larry King Live, "Holiday at the Pops" christmas special, and "Home for the Holidays," which all aired during December. Then their "Simply Christmas" tour kicked off on the day after Thanksgiving.

For the December 17th concert, held in Rosement (Chicago), Illionois' Allstate Arena, Grant and Gill transformed a place usually filled with the the sound of carnage from hockey and basketball games into a temple resonating with the celebration of Christ's birth.

Grant's version of "Silver Bells" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" were somewhat secular but still passed as enjoyable under the wing of Christmas classics. However, her choice to sing "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" did nothing to nurture the true meaning of Christmas. The same goes for Grant's performance on "Mr.Sandman" which talks about a little man bringing dreams to people sleeping. The orchestral accompainment was delightful but the content of the song did nothing to reveal the true dream of God, which is the establishment of His great Kingdom.

All was not lost. Grant redeemed the concert with "O Come All Ye Faithful" and Gill made a comeback with "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night." They finished with powerful pieces reconverging into Holy-Spirit-guided music such as "Breath of Heaven" and "House of Love," which did not pertain to Christmas but still touched base on its essence. The concert demonstrated that both are still great singers, the orchestra was smashing, but there were few gliches in song selection that could have strengthen their performance.
