David Hasselhoff Trying to Save Berlin Wall

David Hasselhoff may have saved quite a few swimmers during his time on "Baywatch," but the actor is now trying to save a portion of the Berlin Wall. Ironically, Hasselhoff was one of the stars atop the Berlin Wall as it came down in 1989.

"This last piece of the wall is really sacred; it's about people and it's about hearts that were broken, hearts that were torn apart and lives that were lost. That's what we're talking about today, not a piece of real estate," Hasselhoff told reporters. "It's like tearing down an Indian burial ground. It's a no-brainer."

Hasselhoff was in Berlin to try and help prevent the last remaining portion of the wall from being torn down by developers.

"I don't think I can afford to buy the land," he told The Guardian. "But we could raise the money– maybe we will. If it goes to the next step, we'll come back with a huge concert and really rock Berlin."

The development group Living Bauhaus purchased the land from the Berlin senate in October and have intentions to build on the area. Residents are worried that the remaining wall will be destroyed along with the memories and stories of a different time and era. They are incredibly grateful to Hasselhoff for his help and willingness to stand with them.

"David offered to do anything to help; he said the wall was special to him," Lutz Leichsenring told The Guardian. "We've talked with him about creating an online platform to raise legal fees to fight the development."

"David Hasselhoff was here when the wall came down and now he's here because he wants to save the last piece," added Theresa Sheppard. "He's the only celebrity who's trying. Lots of people just think he's funny; they don't take him seriously. We think saving the wall is important but we probably wouldn't have come to the protest if he hadn't been here."

Hasselhoff famously performed "Looking for Freedom" atop the Berlin Wall on New Year's Eve in 1989. It solidified his presence and popularity among the German people. That popularity has been renewed due to his help in saving the wall.
