Matthew of course was involved in a tragic car accident during the Downton Abbey Christmas Special in 2012. That accident left his new wife, Mary (played b Michelle Dockery) a widow, and also left her as a single mother to their newborn son.

Other news has indicated that executive producer Gareth Neame recently told the New York Daily News that he thinks the show may have six more years of high quality stories to tell following Season 4 before things come to an end. That prospect would delight hardcore fans of Downton Abbey.

However, Neame also added that he does not want the show just to go on for the sake of a long run, but that it should finish when it is still producing the best quality entertainment and story.

"I would rather that we picked the right year [to end] and that in 20 years time the show was loved rather than we went on a season too long and people fell out of love with it," Neame said while in Los Angeles for Santa Monica's Britweek.

Downton Abbey has become a global hit, now airing in 219 countries across the globe.

The series follows the lives of the royal Crawley family and their staff, and is set in the 1920s.

According to The Huffington Post, Season 4 of Downton Abbey will premiere on Jan. 5, 2014.
