Each and Every Moment

Psalm 139:1-10 NIV

O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

You hem me in - behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

When we think of all the billions of people who have lived, are living now, and who will live in the future, it's very hard to comprehend that God knows each and every one of us intimately. You and I have a hard time remembering more than a few people's names, much less the intimate details of each of their lives. Imagine knowing billions of people by name, and knowing everything there is to know about every single one of them! And not just the size of their families, their kids' names, their address, and things like that, but everything in each person's thoughts and feelings!

Amazing as that is, it's a fact that God knows you and me intimately. He knows everything we do and say and think. In every moment that passes, He is right there with you, deeply involved in your life. Not only is He with you in the here and now, but - since He sees the past, present and future all at the same time - He's also keeping your future before Him while He is caring for you today. As if that singular juggling act wasn't enough, He does the same with me, and with every other person in existence now - and in the past - and in the future!

Like David, who wrote this Psalm, this knowledge gives me a deep sense of comfort and security. As finite as I am, the infinite God Almighty - the great I AM - cares enough to be with me, personally, every moment of every day - laughing with me, crying with me, holding me when the world comes down around me, lifting me up when I'm down, guiding my every footstep (when I let Him!) and keeping me from stumbling.

Read it again.

"O Lord, You have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in - behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast."

That says it all, doesn't it? How precious is the knowledge that we can never be without the Lord. How precious is the comfort of knowing that He is always there with us, even in our darkest hours. How precious is the understanding of His steadfast, unchanging and ever-present love.
