Galaxy S5 Root: First Person to Discover Method Could Win $18,000 Prize

The first developer to find a way to root the Galaxy S5 on Verizon and AT&T could win an $18,000 prize.

The XDA-developer's community is offering this money to the first person that figures out how to unlock both of these models. They also released a list of requirements that must be met in order to attain the money.

They include being the first person to create or find a method to exploit a fully stock VRU1ANBG build to gain root access and making a post in their thread that proves the method works with appropriate screen shots. They also must give step by step instructions and wait for at least one member to use this method and confirm that it works on their S5. Once all of these requirements are met, the bounty will be available to that person who accomplished this small feat.

The Galaxy S5 launched earlier this year and replaces the S4 as Samsung's current flagship device and features what the company deems a "glam" design with a perforated back plate that shines in different lighting conditions. It will have full LTE coverage, Wi-Fi MIMO 802.11 to cut down buffering, and a download booster that will allow users to download 1GB worth of media in 30 seconds.

Samsung has also drastically improved the battery that now provides users with 10 hours of web surfing, 12 hours of video playback and offers a new Ultra Power Saving mode. This new mode can grant the user another 24 hours' worth of power if their phone is at 10 percent. It does this by only keeping necessary functions on and turning the screen to black and white.

Samsung also decided to install a fingerprint swipe feature that users can utilize for authorizing payments. It can unlock a special private mode which secures all important documents, settings and files.

AT&T also recently launched the water and dust proof Galaxy S5 Active. It features almost identical specs to the original model and has a body that is made for the most rugged of conditions.
