'Hakyuu Houshin Engi' Promotional Video, Latest News: New 'Soul Hunter' Adaptation Joins 2018 Winter Anime List

A new promotional video has been released for the upcoming Japanese action-fantasy anime series, "Hakyuu Houshin Engi."

The series will be the second adaptation of Ryu Fujisaki's popular manga series, "Houshin Engi," also known as "Soul Hunter," which has previously been animated in 1999. It will reportedly feature a new cast list in its 23-episode run.

Aside from providing a glimpse of the various characters appearing on the series, the video also previews the opening theme song titled "Keep the Heat and Fire Yourself Up," performed by the Japanese electronicore band, Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas.

On the other hand, popular Japanese singer-songwriter, Nagi Yanagi will be performing the ending theme titled, "Madoi Mirai."

The series, which is reportedly based on the ancient Chinese novel, "Fengshen Yanyi," also known as "The Creation of the Gods," is set thousands of years ago during which a female fox spirit named Dakki has taken control of the current emperor, Chu-o, and has been using him to do spread evil across the nation.

It is for this reason that an immortal-in-training named Taikobo is chosen to head the Houshin Project, which aims to hunt and destroy the evil demons that have infested the lands. And it is while fulfilling this mission that Taikobo meets up with other powerful companions that join him in their ultimate quest to take the evil fox-spirit down and thus re-establish peace in their nation.

Masahiro Aizawa will be directing the series for the Japanese animation studio C-Station, while Natsuko Takahashi takes charge of the series scripts written by Yoshiki Okusa and Rintarou Ikeda. Yoshimitsu Yamashita serves as character designer, while Maiko Iuchi takes care of music composition.

Kensho Ono has been cast as the voice of the series protagonist, Taikobo, while Yoko Hikasa takes on the voice of the evil fox-spirit, Dakki. Other cast members include Yuichi Nakamura, KENN, Tomoaki Maeno, Daisuke Namikawa, and Nobuhiko Okamoto, among others.

"Hakyuu Houshin Engi" premieres next year on Friday, Jan. 12, at 10 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX and at midnight JST on Sun TV. It will also air on AT-X starting on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. JST. Information on other broadcast schedules and online resources can be found on the series' official site.
