Huawei Mate 10 Pro Specs Reviews: AI-Centered Phone Keeps Up With Top Flagship Models

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is marketed as a flagship with Artificial Intelligence at its core, with this model being the first phone on the market powered by the new Kirin 970 processor with its neural processing unit (NPU). How does it stack up with the top flagships in the market today?

Design-wise, the new Huawei Mate keeps up with the latest trend of slim bezels. Huawei calls their take on the trend their FullView form factor, and both the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro features ultra-thin side bezels and just the minimal top and bottom bars, as Android Authority notes.

The Pro variant has a six-inch Full HD AMOLED display, with support for HDR 10. Content streaming that supports HDR, like YouTube or Netflix, will be able to take full advantage of the colors the OLED display has to offer. The fingerprint sensor is on the rear, under the vertically arrayed dual camera.

Speaking of cameras, benchmarking group DxO has assessed the new Huawei Mate 10 Pro's dual camera system and has given it a score of 97. That's just a hair under the Google Pixel 2's score of 98, according to GSM Arena.

This score also beats that of the iPhone 8 Plus by a significant margin, with the latter getting a 94. This is due to the Huawei Mate 10 Pro getting a 100 for performance on photo, with DxO giving the phone top marks for minimal noise and great detail in its photos.

For video, the Mate 10 Pro got a DxOMark score of 91 as well, with high scores for contrast, color accuracy and a fast and accurate autofocus.

For the rest of its components, the Mate 10 pro supports its Kirin 970 chipset with 4 GB to 6 GB of memory, with options for 64 GB or up to 128 GB of storage. The handset is also water and dust resistant, rated at IP67.

The Mate 10 Pro, however, has a few puzzling omissions that the smaller, non-Pro variant has. It lacks a microSD card slot or a headphone jack, which could be the compromise made to make the handset water resistant.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro was announced to cost €799, or around $940, when it goes on sale later this November according to Tech Radar. A specific U.S. price is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
