Hugh Jackman Diet for 'Wolverine' Revealed, Actor is 'Off Chicken'

Hugh Jackman discussed bulking up for his latest role in "The Wolverine" this week.

The 44-year-old actor is well known for having chiseled muscles, but his latest role as the Marvel Comics character required him to really bulk up his body.

"I used to love chicken but not so much anymore," admitted the Australian actor while speaking to The Express U.K. "I ate so much chicken for this movie. At one point I was eating like 4,000 calories a day. It might sound like fun but I can assure you it isn't!"

Furthermore, Jackman noted that his diet plan to gain body mass consisted of almost strictly protein.

"We're not talking fun calories here," he said. "It's loads of chicken, fish, some steak, steamed vegetables and protein shakes. So I'm off chicken for a while."

Alternately, Jackman's role in "Les Miserables" required the actor to lose a dramatic amount of weight instead up bulk up, which was equally difficult to do.

The actor shed 30 pounds for his role as Valjean in "Les Mis," which was directed by Tom Hooper.

"Tom [Hooper] said, 'I want to make you unrecognizable, the people in your life may ask what's going on with you, are you sick, or else you haven't gone far enough," said Jackman during a press conference.

"I did lose a lot of weight and then had the joy of putting it back on, but I have to say all that pales in comparison to what [co-star Anne Hathaway] did," he added while speaking to reporters. "At least I had time to prepare and do that."

Meanwhile, Jackman has been married to wife Deborra-Lee Furness for 17 years and often discusses how rare successful marriages are in Hollywood.

"From day one, we were best mates," said the actor during a recent interview with Good Housekeeping magazine. "We just clicked. We were giggling and laughing- we just connected."

The actor also revealed a few secrets to his happy marriage.

"My number one rule for romance is surprise," said the Australian actor, before he also noted that "the bedrock of any relationship is to communicate."
