iPad Mini Rumors: Apple to Release 2 New Versions

Apple plans on releasing two new iPad Mini models in the near future.

"We see two refreshes coming," DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told CNET in a recent report. "One in the second half of this year, then one in Q1 of 2014. The Q1 device will have a Retina display plus an updated processor."

The report also reveals that Apple will release the first new version at the end of 2013 and that it will also come with a retina display. It is unclear whether it will have a new processor or not.

KGI Securities analyst Mini-Chi Kuo also weighed in on the iPad Mini tablet recently, stating that technical challenges with the retina model were delaying its release. He did not provide readers with a specific prediction for the tablet's release, but he instead outlined three possible scenarios, showing it launching in between September and November of 2013. This falls in line with Shim's prediction as he also stated that Apple will launch another iPad Mini towards the end of this year.

DisplaySearch analyst Paul Semenza also recently spoke to CNET regarding the tablet.

"We're seeing potential in the third quarter of panel production for a higher resolution iPad Mini," Semenza speculated. "When would the Mini be available? Could be third or fourth quarter."

He stated that the resolution on the iPad Mini successor will be 2048 x 1536 pixels. This would give it the same number of pixels as the fourth-generation full sized iPad, but at a higher density of 324 ppi. The task of using a display that powerful in a mini iPad would be tough for Apple as the company might have to make the chassis thicker in order to incorporate it.

Apple is also expected to introduce the fifth-generation full sized iPad this year.
