iPhone 5 Release Date: Al Gore Confirms October Debut?

Former vice president Al Gore may have ousted the debut of the highly anticipated iPhone 5, stating at a conference on Wednesday that "new iPhones" will be released in October.

At the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, editor of Stuff Magazine SA, Kingsley Corbett told AP that Gore gave a speech and spoke about an upcoming iPhone release.

"Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug," Gore was quoted as saying.

Gore, who is currently an Apple Inc. board member may possibly have access to such information as the release dates of the company’s products.

Thus far, rumors have localized that the iPhone 5 will release sometime in October. Various dates such as October 7, October 12, October 15 and October 21 have all been considered.

While Gore's slip indicates that there will be a new iPhone released in 2011, it does not detail whether it will be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S, the proposed low cost version, which is said to be similar to the iPhone 4.

Apple is expected to host a conference on October 4 where new CEO Tim Cook will finally divulge the release date of the iPhone 5.

Recently, a T-Mobile executive was rumored as saying that the network would not be releasing the iPhone 5 in 2011. T-Mobile has since recanted the statement and says it is not responding to rumors about the iPhone.

Rumors also indicate that the iPhone 5 is currently experiencing design and production delays and may be released only in limited numbers all the way into 2012.

It is speculated that the Sprint network will carry the iPhone upon its release.

While Sprint remains tight lipped about specifics, many have noted that the network has recently increased its smartphone termination fee to $350 and has deceased its return policy window from 30 days to 14 days.
