There are many different types of games on Facebook, some that allow users to play the role of farmers or even mafia hit-men, but a new game allows users to walk through the life of one of God's chosen leaders from the book of Exodus – Moses.
“Journey of Moses” was created by the game developers at Hexify to fill a gap in the market for Bible-based games, and its creators are ensuring gamers that it is high-quality fun.
"With web-based games played on social networks drawing nearly half a billion people worldwide, we felt it was time for a biblically based game that showcases one of the greatest adventures of all time," said Brent Dusing, CEO of Hexify.
At the beginning of the game, players take control of a young Moses who is being summoned to a meeting with Pharoah, but he first needs to find clothing that will make him look more presentable. From then on, gamers will walk through Moses' life, which includes his exile from Egypt, his encounter with God at the burning bush, and his return to Egypt to lead the Israelites to freedom.
"We were careful to adhere to the accounts in the Bible and the overarching spirit of the story, even vetting certain aspects with theological leaders," Dusing said.
As is the case with other Facebook games, players can easily share their “Journey of Moses” successes with their friends through the social media site.
A study by Lightspeed Research published in Sept. 2010 says that 53 percent of Facebook users have played a social media game. Of those surveyed, 19 percent of them said that they consider themselves to be “addicted” to social gaming. Facebook has approximately 750 million active users.
Though the game itself is free to play, gamers can also purchase (with real money) items to help them through Moses' journey, as is the case with many other social media-type games. Nearly one-third (31 percent) of gamers have used real money to purchase virtual goods for games that they play, according to a study commissioned by PlaySpan and conducted by VGMarket that was published on Aug. 3.
"Whether you already play social games or you are interested in the story of Moses, we believe we have created a game that everyone can enjoy,” said Dusing.
Hexify, Inc. began in 2010 and is located in Mountain View, Calif. Journey of Moses is the company's third adventure game on Facebook.
