Joy Bauer Offers Tips on How to 'Eat Better'

As millions of people worldwide struggle daily with their weight and health, it has been revealed that food can also cause premature aging because of the ingredients listed inside.

Sometimes the answer is as simple as avoiding certain things and eating more of others. Rather than going on crash diets, exercise binges, or weight loss pills and supplements, Huffington Post’s The Thread talks about the food people consume as the key factor of their health.

The first topic at hand was breakfast pastries like Danishes, donuts, and toaster cakes. "It's all white flower, sugar, and fat. It's also really bad for your skin all that sugar can exacerbate premature aging and wrinkling," said Joy Bauer, nutritionist for the "Today" show, to Huffington Post.

These combinations of ingredients cause a raise in blood sugar. As a result, energy levels crash rather.

Another culprit of aging on the body is bagels because of their high starch content. Huffington Post says one bagel is the equivalent of eating about four slices of white bread.

Deep-dish pizza is a lot like bagels as well, containing a lot of starchy bread with no fibers or natural grains. Smoother on cheese, sauce, and a hefty amount of fatty meats and there is virtually no nutritional value to it.

Movie theater popcorn is a calorie juggernaut with one medium bucket being equal to around three fast food burgers. The high content of salt and butter takes the naturally good for you snack and makes it a calorie killer.

The mystery meat known as the hot dog is not a protein stuffer like most people think. It is actually 80% fat and contains no nutrients, according to Bauer.

Fatty meats like hot dogs, sausage, and bacon have been linked to heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes.

Bauer was quick to offer up some healthy alternatives for each of these mentioned "forbidden" foods.

She said, for breakfast try a toasted whole-wheat pita with mixed fruit and nut butter spread.

Instead of a bagel, Bauer insists on a whole-grain bagel with some of the dough scooped out and light cream cheese or nut butter.

As a replacement for a deep-dish pie, she urges people to eat thin crust and use fiber-rich vegetables instead of meat.

For popcorn, Bauer suggest making your own batch of salt and butter free popcorn at home, and bringing it into the theater.

Lastly, she said, avoid hot dogs altogether.
