"Doctor Who" actress Karen Gillan confidently debuted a bald head over the weekend during the 2013 Comic-Con in San Diego.
Gillan first appeared for a panel at the Comic-Con with her signature red locks cut to shoulder length. But the next day, mid-panel, the actress pulled the locks of hair from her head to reveal that she was actually wearing a wig to cover her shaved head.
In May 2013 Gillan revealed that she pay Nebula in the superhero sci-fi film "Guardian of the Galaxy." The film is scheduled for release in 2014, but Gillan was forced to shave her head for the role. Her character is a villainous pirate with plans of wiping out all of civilization.
Gillan is also working on a handful of other films, which include a supernatural horror film titled "Oculus" where she plays the lead character, and a television series titled "A Touch of Cloth." Outside of sci-fi films Gillan has also appeared in romantic comedies. Her most recent, which premiered at theEdinburgh International Film Festival in June 2013, was titled "Not Another Happy Ending."
The Comic-Con began as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970. It has since become known as the Comic-Con International: San Diego. While the convention originally only gathered comic book fans, it has since expanded to include science fiction/fantasy and film/television. Other popular entertainment fields are also represented now such as horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels.
The four-day event has been regarded by Forbes as one of the "largest conventions of its kind in the world. It often hosts over 100,000 attendees with a growing number of people becoming more interested in its offerings.
