Then on January 20, 2011 Von D and James announced their engagement in People magazine and were said to be planning a summer wedding.

James’ infamous divorce from actress Sandra Bullock in 2010 created a media scandal, and the star of “History of the Chopper” and “Jesse James is a Dead Man” publicly issued an apology to Bullock.

“There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me,” James offered after rumors of infidelity swirled.

James and Bullock cited “conflict of personalities” as the reason for their divorce which was finalized on June 28, 2010.

Upon his engagement to Von D, James told People magazine: “Sometimes the public and press gets it wrong. This is one of those times. 2010 was actually the best year of my life because I fell in love with my best friend.”

James continued of Von D, “An amazing woman who stood behind me when the world turned their backs.”

James told People magazine Tuesday that distance was a factor in the breakup. Von D films her reality television show in Los Angeles while James lives in Austin, Texas. “I’m so sad because I really love her,” James revealed. “The distance between us was just too much.”
