Kris Allen in Car Accident, Tweets 'I'm Gonna Be a Daddy'

"American Idol" winner Kris Allen was injured in a car accident on New Year's Day; the singer was with his wife Katy and their dog Zorro. Fortunately, the most serious injury was Allen's broken arm, which required surgery. The singer also used the opportunity to tweet about his wife's pregnancy, which is the first for both of them.

"Thank you @ford for equipping me with a car that kept my whole family @katyallen @ZorroPup and the little one we have on the way safe. Yes, I got in a really bad wreck tonight and yes I'm having a lil baby #gonnabeadaddy," Allen tweeted with his non-injured hand.

Allen won the Ford vehicle after taking home the title of American Idol in May 2009. He battled against runner-up Adam Lambert, who has been busy making his own way through the entertainment industry, and was left flabbergasted by the win.

"It feels good, man, but Adam deserves this," Allen said when it was announced he had won. "I don't know what to feel right now, this is crazy. Thank you – you guys are the reason that all of us are here," he told the audience.

Allen's rise to fame from a small town in Arkansas has been one of legends; prior to his appearance on the show, he self-released an album entitled "Brand New Shoes." His song "No Boundaries" and the cover of "Heartless" both made it to the Top 20 of the Billboard's Hot 100.

He is a Christian who was a member of Chi Alpha ministries, as well as a worhship leader for the New Life Church in Conway and Little Rock, Arkansas. He decided to focus on his music, though, and quit college during his junior year to focus on a professional music career.

Allen married his wife, Katy, in 2008 after dating throughout high school and college. They are both in the entertainment industry and help in several philanthropic organizations.

One final message Allen had for his fans after the accident was: "Don't worry everyone I may have broken my wrist but the #OutAliveTour is still on!"
