LG to Launch its Curved Screen OLED TV in Next Month

LG will release its curved screen OLED TV next month.

The company started accepting pre-orders for the 55-inch set recently. LG hopes to increase customer interest in its television sets by beating many of its competitors to the market with this curved model. The company's television sales started declining last year, according to NDP Display Search.

LG feels that is curved screen set will improve user experience by eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail. The company spent the last five years developing and perfecting the technology that will be used on the TV. The screen surface on LG's 55EA9800 model is said to show an equally distant design that allows viewers to see clearly no matter where they sit.

The new TV measures in at 4.3 millimeters thick and weighs 17 kilograms. It will cost $13,500. NDP Display Search predicts that LG will sell two million units in its first two years and seven million by 2016.

The set will feature WRGB technology that allows people to deliver color with a white sub-pixel along with red, blue, and green pixels, which are found in standard television sets. It will also have transparent thin-film speakers that provide high quality sound.

Samsung debuted its curved OLED TV at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Samsung also hopes to provide more depth to the viewing experience by releasing a set with a curved display that it promotes as almost life-like. The company also says that the OLED TV will have an immersive panorama effect that is not possible to achieve with the conventional flat-panel TVs.

The Los Angeles Times was able to get a first look at Samsung's OLED TV as this year's CES, stating that the curve did not affect the way that viewer's eye saw the image and said that the overall picture quality was "unsurprisingly, remarkable."
