'Major Headache' Winter Storm Marcus Won't Give Northeast Snow Break; Over 1,000 Flights Canceled

Pedestrians make their way along a snow covered street during a winter snow storm in Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 9, 2015. Boston and other areas of the Northeast, already buried under about a yard of snow, braced for up to two more feet through early Tuesday while more rain and high winds were in store for parts of the Pacific coast, forecasters said on Sunday.

Another winter storm, named Marcus, is set to hit the Northeast, affecting more than 36 million people and causing a "major headache" for travelers Monday morning with up to 1 to 2 feet of snow in some areas.

Portions of New York State and New England will have heavy snow as the new week begins, the National Weather Service says, adding that freezing rain will spread from western Pennsylvania to Long Island, with rain for the mid-Atlantic states.

Parts of central and northeast Massachusetts could see snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches, possibly up to 24 inches, while Upstate New York could have 9 to 18 inches of snow.

Freezing rain is possible in the northern Plains due to heavy snow in the northern Rocky Mountains, but stormy weather will begin to exit California.

Travel conditions would be dangerous from Sunday night to Tuesday morning due to the "long duration snow event" expected to last until Monday night, warned the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

The fourth named winter storm in the country in the last two weeks, Marcus has already led to the cancellation of about 500 Monday arrivals and departure at Boston Logan International Airport, 432 at LaGuardia and 217 at John F. Kennedy International airports in New York, according to NBC.

Boston has received more than 55 inches of snow during this season thus far, while the city's seasonal average is a little more than 40 inches.

Schools in parts of the Northeast, including Boston, will be closed Monday and Tuesday, according to CNN.

"At this time, our concern is not just about the snow that has begun to fall. It's about the cumulative impact of this storm coming on the heels of the others," Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker was quoted as saying.

"As another winter storm approaches the state, I'm urging all New Yorkers to be extra alert and plan ahead when driving to stay safe and avoid delays," New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said. "We have deployed resources in every region of the state to respond and will closely monitor conditions as the storm progresses over the next 36 hours."
