Mitt Romney Gives Money to 'Cash Strapped' Volunteer Before SC Primary

Volunteer Says God Told Her, 'Pray for Romney'

Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney answered an unemployed campaign volunteer's prayers Saturday when he handed her the cash in his wallet in South Carolina.

Ruth Williams of Colombia, S.C. opened up about her financial woes to the former governor of Massachusetts, prompting him to hand her between $50 and $60, according to CBS news.

"I was on the highway praying and said, ‘God just show me how to get [my] lights on,’ and I pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there," Williams, 55, explained.

"I’ve been working at the campaign offices, cleaning and doing little things ... God didn’t tell me to go to nobody else, He told me to pray for Romney," she added.

While Williams believes 64-year-old Romney gave her the cash because "he’s a kind guy," critics questioned whether it was a ploy to buy votes for the presidential hopeful ahead of Saturday's primary in S.C.

Romney, who in his 2008 presidential campaign finished fourth place in S.C., has a promising lead in the predominantly evangelical Christian state despite voters' previous hang-ups about his Mormon faith.

Even with the endorsement of former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, Romney may get a run for his money. Despite his growing popularity, Christian conservative rivals Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich may fare better in the right-leaning state Saturday.

“I think the only way that a Massachusetts moderate can get through South Carolina is if the vote is split,” Gingrich told The Associated Press.

Gingrich was also recently quoted as saying that he would reconsider his bid for presidency if Romney wins in S.C.

While some critics remain wary of Romney because he has been accused of flip-flopping on social issues like abortion, supporters like Williams are already convinced that he would deliver as an elected leader.

"I told them about my problems and that I just want to work. I just want to work ... they really came through for real ... They really help people find jobs," Williams insisted.

Although Williams remains unemployed, she was extremely grateful for the money that Romney gave her and attributes his "kind" act to her prayers to God.
