Mockery of Tradition? Lesbian High School Couple Named Homecoming King and Queen

On Friday, a lesbian high school couple became the first to be crowned homecoming king and queen in the nation, according to various media reports.

Rebeca Arellano, a senior at San Diego's Patrick Henry High, was chosen as homecoming king at a pep rally and her girlfriend of two years, Haileigh Adams, was named homecoming queen. The two told ABC News they are thrilled not only about their own win but also about what this means for other gay students who are struggling to be accepted by their peers.

"Another student that's also lesbian said 'we won,' which was what I wanted," said Arellano. "I love Patrick Henry for supporting me."

Adams said, "The fact that other people are feeling more confident about themselves or feeling like they might have a chance at doing this, it's opening doors."

While the couple has received an overwhelming amount of support from family, friends, and staff at the school, the story has sparked much controversy online and has some arguing that the win makes a mockery of tradition. Many feel that the title of homecoming king should have been given to a male.

"What a disgrace," wrote one user. "Unbelievable how sexually confused our children are becoming due to the social pressures stating that it is 'normal'."

Another commenter wrote, "Okay, this isn't fair by any means because the definition of a king explicitly states it's 'a male sovereign or monarch; a man who holds by life tenure, and usually by hereditary right, the chief authority over a country and people.' This individual here is a female thus she ought to be considered as a queen which is 'a female sovereign or monarch.' All these manipulations in these high school homecomings are beginning to become a joke every year."

However, Arellano shot back at the naysayers with a Facebook post asking them to reconsider what the word 'tradition' means before wishing society would revert back to it.

"For all the girls who think tradition should be continued, go back to the kitchen, stop having sex before you're married, get out of school and job system, don't have an opinion, don't own any property, give up the right to marry who you love, don't vote, and allow your husband to do whatever he pleases to you," she wrote. "Think about the meaning of tradition when you use it in your argument against us."
