Bordeaux meanwhile will be in confident mood having destroyed Club Bruges in their opening match 4-0. They currently lie top of the group, but would probably accept a draw as a good result from tonight's away game.

Domestically Bordeaux have got off to a reasonably good start to the season; they are unbeaten in their first seven games and at the moment sit in fifth place in the French Ligue 1 table.

Newcastle meanwhile have had a reasonable start to their season as well although it has spurned mixed results. They currently lie 10th in the English Premier League table having claimed nine points from their opening six games.

There is some good team news for Newcastle, with full back Danny Simpson back from injury having been out for more than a month with a hamstring problem. He could be drafted straight back in the side, which is missing other center backs Steven Taylor (calf) and Fabricio Coloccini (hamstring).

Newcastle's midfielder Yohan Cabaye has also recovered from a mouth infection. He has said in advance of tonight's game that he believes a good run in the Europa League could be healthy for the Magpies. He spoke about his experience in the competition with former club Lille, "With Lille, we played for three or four years in the Europa League and I think that competition helped us to win the French title and the French cup

"It's important to play 100% in this competition to get more experience for the future. Now we have got [into] the Europa League, we have to play to win the game because we are playing at home. We know Bordeaux are a good team but we are a good team as well, so we have to win the game to have a winning mentality," according to BBC Sport.
