Oklahoma Teen Dies After Breaking Leg in Football Practice

An Oklahoma teenager who broke his leg during football practice has died.

Edmond North High School sophomore Ryan Smith died Wednesday night, a day after he suffered the injury, Edmond School District spokeswoman Susan Parks said.

Smith's Grandparent's could not wake him up on Wednesday and he was taken to the Integris Baptist Medical Center emergency, according to Parks. The 16-year-old died almost nine minutes after getting to the hospital, hospital officials say.

It is unknown whether his death has anything to do with his broken leg. The state medical examiner's office will do an autopsy, according to hospital officials.

Counselors visited students at the high school on Thursday.

Ryan Grew up in Carney, Oklahoma. He attended Edmond Santa Fe High School his freshman year and was on the football and wrestling teams. He transferred to Edmond North his sophomore year.

Both high schools will be honoring Ryan over the next few days.
