Olympian Jamie Nieto: 'Put God First, You Can Do Everything'

Jamie Nieto is an Olympian who has starred in the recently released film "Jerusalem Countdown." He took the time to speak with The Christian Post while at the 2012 Olympics in London.

"Your only limitations are what you believe them to be, and as long as you put God first, you can achieve all things through Him," the American high jumper posted on his website. It's a motto that has seen him through two Olympic events and has guided his career choices.

"When I speak to people all the time, that is something I try to share on people – if you put God first, you can do everything. Me through my athletics – I'm 35 and the oldest on high jump team – is a prime example. I need God in every aspect to help me move forward in my career and being here at the Olympics is a testament," he explained.

What is it like for you to be at your second Olympic games?

Things are going well; getting prepared for the races. It's pretty quiet, as most track-and-field people are starting to compete. People are competing now, business-as-usual. People just look focused.

Is there a religious life or community for Olympians while they compete?

We have an area where people can pray, services are held. They do have a community area where Olympians can speak to pastors.

Could you talk a little about your own faith?

I've always been into the church, even as a young kid. We moved around a lot. When I got a bit older, I settled down in high school. When I went to Eastern Michigan, I felt that something was missing in my life (spiritual guidance from God), and I started getting back into the church. After that, I moved to San Diego, and I've been down there since 2000. It's been a great experience. I love my church, the community.

After the games, I have a few more competitions … then want to focus on the web series. [It] has a good message. It's a mixed message media that hasn't been on TV. I want to continue to speak to kids, people, and hopefully encourage them and glorify God to the best of my ability, in everything I do.

"Jerusalem Countdown" focuses on conflict between Israel and Islamic countries. Nieto has referred to his time on the film as "an amazing experience and awesome opportunity.

"When nuclear weapons are smuggled into America, Senior FBI Agent Shane Daughtry (David A.R. White) is faced with an impossible task – find them before they are detonated," reads the website. In addition to Nieto, Stacy Keach, Randy Travis, and Christian performer Jaci Velasquez star in the film.

It is currently available online and to rent from Redbox. For more information about Jamie Nieto, or to watch his new web series, please visit www.JamieNieto.com.
