Prince William Marks Anniversary of Diana's Death With Trip to Aunt's Home

August 31 marked the anniversary of Princess Diana's death, and her son, Prince William, as well as his wife Kate and son George spent the day visiting with his aunt, Diana's oldest sister.

A helicopter reportedly took the royal family to the farm in Stoke Rochford where Lady Sarah McCorquodale resides. William is thought to be especially close to his aunt, given that she served as his mother's lady in waiting, and he and brother Harry often spent days playing with their cousins.

McCorquodale served as president of the Diana Memorial fund, which raised over $155 million dollars. That money went to Diana's favorite charities and helped support people around the world who were impoverished or living in unfavorable conditions. According to its website, the money went to 471 organizations across every country in the United Kingdom and every continent.

William has tried hard to juggle spending time with the two sides of his family, which became even more meaningful in the wake of Diana's death 16 years ago. Last year, he and Kate attended the wedding of his cousin, Emily McCorquodale.

William was only 15 years old when his mother died, and her death hit him especially hard given their close relationship. He and Harry, who was 13, managed to display a maturity beyond their years as they greeted public mourners and walked behind their mother's casket in the funeral procession. Neither spoke a word publicly until two years later.

"Never being able to say the word 'Mummy' again in your life sounds like a small thing," William told the press when he became the Royal Patron of the Child Bereavement Charity. "However, for many, including me, it's now really just a word – hollow and evoking only memories."

Harry and William have seemingly taken on the task of fulfilling their mother's legacy by leading some of her favorite charities and working together to ensure she is not forgotten.
