PS4 Software Update Arrives, New 1.75 Version Brings 3D Blu-Ray Support

The 1.75 software update for the PS4 is now rolling out, according to Sony.

It is said to introduce the ability for the console to play 3D Blu-Ray films and will also bring other minor tweaks and fixes. This is the first time a new feature has hit the console since April when ShareFactory was first introduced. Sony might have rushed this feature out in order to keep up with Microsoft, who recently announced that 3D Blu-Ray support would be available on the Xbox One soon.

ShareFactory is a rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for players to customize their gameplay videos. Users can upload them to Facebook or store them on an external device.

Sony has enjoyed much success with the PS4 thus far as it quickly become one of the company's fastest selling consoles after launching in the winter of 2013. Part of that success is due to a strategy that targets Wii customers.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House explained the strategy to Eurogamer earlier this month.

"Our big opportunity is to welcome back an audience much earlier in the lifecycle that possibly bought into the Wii previously, he said. "Whether it's based on this is a really good all-round entertainment device for a family in addition to having great games, our consumer data suggests some of those people are already coming in now and that's what's contributing to the really great sales we had."

He also said that Sony used this data when deciding if it should re-master some of the more popular titles for the PS3 such as "The Last of Us." House feels the new versions will sell because there are many PS4 owners who never had a PS3 to play them.

"I've always looked with envy at the movie industry about what a great job they're able to do with taking content and making it work," he said. "Disney is the best example of this, right, of taking classic content and reintroducing it to audiences over time."
