Royal Baby News Update: Obama and Other World Leaders Respond

On Monday, July 22, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton gave birth to their first child, a baby boy. The baby weighed 8 pounds and 6 ounces. The birth became an international event and was widely covered by the media. Leaders from around the world sent well wishes to the new parents.

Barack and Michelle Obama gave a statement referencing the ties between America and Great Britain, according to CNN.

"The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince," the statement said.

Stephen Harper, Canada's Prime Minister, sent warm wishes to the royal couple.

"The arrival of the newest member of the Royal Family, a future Sovereign of Canada, is a highly anticipated moment for Canadians given the special and warm relationship that we share with our Royal Family," the Canadian Prime Minister said in a statement.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was pleased to welcome the new prince.

"It is a happy, wonderful news for the United Kingdom as well as the world. I would like to send my heartfelt congratulations," he said.

Kate and William's home country is no exception; British Prime Minister David Cameron was delighted at the news of the new baby.

"It is an important moment in the life of our nation, but I suppose above all, it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy," he said.
