Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Release Date Nears, Pre-Order Dates: Competitor's iPhone Discounts Announced

With its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release nearing the horizon, Samsung announced the opening of its pre-orders Friday before both smartphones become available on U.S. carriers in two weeks.

Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S6 and its curved sibling, the S6 Edge, will be released to the North American public on April 10, with the South Korean multinational announcing the pre-order availability last March 27.

With certain U.S. carriers displaying demo handsets for in-person demos, users will be treated to a first-hand feel of the phones' 5.1-inch body hosting an octacore Exynos processor running Android 5.0 Lollipop, a 16MP optical image stabilizing rear camera and a 5MP front camera, up to 128GB internal storage, and a qHD Super AMOLED display in Corning Gorilla Glass 4 panels, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge features Nano-SIM that comes with a PayPal certified fingerprint sensor and Samsung Pay for Visa and Mastercard.

The S6 also comes in a metal frame, with dual glass cases for both front and back. Color options for both phones come in black, white and gold for the US market, with the navy blue S6 and emerald green S6 Edge available elsewhere.

Touted to be the two top Android smartphones today, the S6 and the S6 Edge will become available with US carriers, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular and AT&T within a couple of weeks, while MetroPSC, Cricket and Boost Mobile will be carrying only the Galaxy S6 by April 10.

Pre-orders for the phones on T-Mobile before April 12 will come with a one-year free Netflix subscription. AT&T will be accepting pre-orders at select stores, while Verizon will be opening their pre-order subscriptions starting April 1.

In anticipation of the April 10 release, Samsung's close competitor, Apple has announced it will be giving substantial discounts for their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The price downgrade is also preparatory to the release of the new iPhone model this fall.
