Samsung Galaxy S9 Release Date, Specs News: New Flagship Device Coming Out in January?

Although the Samsung Galaxy S8 was announced around late March this year, there is a rumor surrounding the possibility of Samsung's next flagship smartphone in line, the Galaxy S9, to arrive as early as January next year.

According to a South Korean news outlet, this speculation stemmed from the news that the tech company's OLED screen shipments will start in November, which is two months earlier than when Samsung began shipments for the Galaxy S8.

If the January launch does push through, the Galaxy S9 could become available in stores sometime in February.

Despite this seemingly convincing theory, TechRadar still believes that the new handset will not be launched until March. This is because of the fact that Samsung has just recently released the Galaxy Note 8, which is said to be the toughest competitor of the upcoming iPhone 8, the speculated 10th-anniversary release of Apple.

Also, the tech advice website has pointed out that smartphone users are likely to upgrade every two years, which is often the length of phone contracts. If Samsung decides to launch the Galaxy S9 a couple of months earlier, those who bought the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the target market for the new release, will not be eligible for the upgrade.

There are also speculations that the Samsung Galaxy S9 launch will take place on Feb. 25, 2018, since next year's Mobile World Congress will run from Feb. 26 to Mar. 1.

As for the design, it might be possible for the upcoming handset to feature curves on all four edges and not just the sides. Samsung is reportedly working on a new lamination process to achieve this look.

However, since Samsung has not made any official statements regarding the highly anticipated phone in the Galaxy S series, these updates will remain as speculations for now.
