Schools in Two Conn. Towns Lift Lockdown After No Threat Determined

Police have lifted the lockdown order on schools in two Connecticut towns, which were put on alert Monday after a suspicious person report.

This lockdown measure occurred just days after a tragic shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 26 people.

"After an extensive police search, no dangerous activity was discovered," school officials told Fox News after the lockdown measure was lifted.

Schools in the city of Ridgefield, Conn., which is approximately 19 miles from Newtown, went into lockdown Monday after a report of a suspicious person reportedly carrying a rifle through the city's local train station, which is located across the street from a school.

Schools in the neighboring town of Redding also went into lockdown as a precaution.

"Due to a report of a possibly suspicious person in the Branchville Train Station area, all schools have been put into lockdown. Branchville Elementary school buses have been diverted to East Ridge Middle School and BES students are in the auditorium," Ridgefield Superintendent Deborah Low said Monday, according to Fox News.

The Connecticut Post indicated that by 11 a.m., the report was believed to be false, but other media outlets indicate that police were continuing to scour the area for the suspected person.

"I'm aware of that situation in the town of Ridgefield. ... There's a report of a suspicious person, a suspicious person that may or may not be armed," Lieutenant Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police told a news conference, according to Reuters.

One witness reportedly called the police department at roughly 8 a.m. Monday reporting that they had seen a white male wearing all black carrying a weapon over his shoulder.

Unofficial reports now indicate that the suspected person was, in reality, a man heading to work carrying an umbrella over his shoulder.

This lockdown measure comes three days after 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire on children, ages 5-10, and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Friday's massacre claimed the lives of 20 children and six adult staff members, with the gunman also dying of a self-inflicted bullet wound at the scene of the crime.

Additionally, Lanza also shot his mother to death at her home in Newtown before going to Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Friday's shooting marks the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, after the 2007 school shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.
