Shia LaBeouf Explains Carey Mulligan Split: 'She Was Chasing Marriage, Family, Kids'

Shia LaBeouf has opened up about his split from actress Carey Mulligan and said that the two had incompatible dreams. The couple began dating in August 2009 but broke up in October of 2010. This is the first time LaBeouf has spoken about the decision to end things with Mulligan.

"Carey is not just an actress, she is a great human being, a sweet girl and super intelligent," he told The Sunday Times magazine. "Our thing came down to not having compatible work [and] lifestyles. We were always traveling and had sensibility differences that weren't conducive to living with one another."

He went on to explain that the two experienced "a culture shock in terms of meeting her parents and vice versa. I'm harder on myself and my surroundings than she is. Sensibilities, cultures, histories. There were [differences], that's all," LaBeouf noted.

Both have moved on from the relationship, with Mulligan now married to Marcus Mumford and LaBeouf dating Karolyn Pho. Don't count on hearing wedding bells for that couple anytime soon, though.

"I'm not opposed to marriage. I just think I'm quite young," the 26-year-old explained. "I come from divorce. I'm only doing marriage once. It's not a game for me. I'm not a religious person, but I have ethics."

As for Mulligan, he wishes her all the best.

"She's happy as hell right now, and we wouldn't have been able to make it like that. She was chasing marriage, family, kids more than I was," the Hollywood actor explained.

LaBeouf is also hard at work on his own movies, including the upcoming "Nymphomaniac," which is already generating quite a buzz. His latest film, "Lawless" has earned good reviews but is darker and more violent than his previous roles.

LaBeouf has earned himself the nickname "Shia La Buff" after appearing nude in a video for band Sigur Ros and, of course, his upcoming role in "Nymphomaniac."
