Smith wraps up Celebration Tour with award and a sold-out concert

“The Celebration Tour” which kicked off in Milwaukee, WI, in mid-October, visited 19 cities during the tour period and finally ended with a big bang in Michael Smith’s home state to a sold-out performance. The sold-out was not the only event that affirmed the achievement of Smith’s 20 year Christian music career but the Distinguished West Virginian Award which was presented to Smith by state Senator Steve Harrison also acknowledged the appreciation of Smith’s work.

“He’s known the world over for his inspirational music, and I thought ‘This is certainly something he’s deserving of,’” said state Sen. Harrison. “He said it wasn’t necessary, but I told him I thought it was long overdue.”

This is Smith’s most successful tour in his career. There were many fans who were able to hear Smith play all their favorite hits, over 140,000 cumulatively. The tour grossed 3.5 million and sold out in 17 of the 19 venues.

Michael W. Smith concerts have played big roles in major markets nationwide. “This concert tour was one of the highlights of the fall season. We promoted four dates and each one not only met, but surpassed our expectations,” says Roy Morgan of Premier Productions.

The demand for Smith’s appearances still runs high. Beginning November 28, Smith will headline the “Christmastime Tour” with special guests Point of Grace and The Katinas. The tour will launch in Duluth, Ga, and proceed to 14 more cities, of which many have reported sold-out concerts.

In addition to seeing stellar tour numbers, Smith’s 17th audio recording, The Second Decade 1993-2003, released on Oct. 7 to claim the No. 1 position on Nielsen SoundScan’s Christian and Christian/Mainstream Combined music sales charts.

His most recent album, Worship and Worship Again, sold more than two-million copies collectively, and the Worship DVD receiving RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) platinum certification.
