Student Killed in Home Invasion: Hofstra University Student Dies as Masked Gunman Breaks Into Home (VIDEO)

A student has been killed during a home invasion early Friday morning in Uniondale, according to authorities.

Hofstra University student, 21-year-old Andrea Rebello of Tarrytown, and an armed suspect were both fatally shot during the break-in, police have reported.

According to reports, Rebello was inside the house at 213 California Avenue with her twin sister, Jessica, as well as another man and woman. However, just before 2.30 a.m. a gunman wearing a ski mask broke into the home, Nassau County Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack has said.

One of the women was able to get away from the house, and she then ran and called 911. Police responded to the home about 10 minutes later, Lack has reported.

He said at a news conference Friday morning, "Shortly after our arrival, there was a police-involved shooting which takes place in the home. In that shooting, the suspect is killed and also one victim is killed."

A firearm has been recovered by police, but at the moment authorities have released no information about who fired the fatal shots and how many gunshots were exchanged. Police do believe, however, that robbery was the motive for the home invasion.

Lack said, "We are getting to the bottom of exactly what happened. We owe it to the family."

According to CBS News one neighbor, Victoria Dehel, 20, said, "I heard people fighting. They were screaming; one girl it sounded like she was pleading for her life, it was really scary."

The victim's sister, who was unharmed in the incident, is now staying with family as they come to terms with their relative's loss.

The other two people in the house at the time of the break in were also students.

Meanwhile, police have offered no further details on the suspect, and investigations are continuing.
