'Suicide Squad 2' Update: 'Legend of Tarzan' Writer in Talks to Pen Script

The creative team behind "Suicide Squad 2" is starting to take form with Warner Bros. Pictures having found the film's writer in Adam Cozad, who is known for his work in "Legend of Tarzan."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cozad is in talks with the studio to write the script for the sequel, which is deemed a priority for Warner Bros.

Cozad will be taking over for David Ayer, who did the writing (and also the directing) duties in the original "Suicide Squad" film. Ayer is currently busy with the Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) spinoff, "Gotham City Sirens."

With regard to the search for the "Suicide Squad 2" director, the shortlist for that gig expands with the addition of "The Shallows" director Jaume-Collet Serra.

The news comes from Meet the Movie Press, with Jeff Sneider of The Tracking Board quoted as saying that Serra has been added to the pool of directors being considered to helm the return of the worst heroes ever to the big screen.

Warner Bros. is familiar with Serra's work since, as per Sneider, he is a "homegrown filmmaker" for the studio. He made majority of his movies namely "House of Wax," "Orphan," "Unknown" and "Run All Night" with the company.

"He delivers hits on a mid-sized budget. He can make a lot out of a little. He's a slick director. He's a diverse hire. He just wrapped The Commuter, so his schedule is clear," Sneider went on to say.

Sneider also pointed out that Serra was actually recruited to helm the stalled live-action "Akira" movie adaptation. Add to the fact that he is under the same agency as Robbie, which means that he already has the connections down, giving him bigger chances to score the gig.

Also in the running to direct "Suicide Squad 2" are Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"), Jonathan Levine ("Warm Bodies"), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Mel Gibson ("Hacksaw Ridge"), who appears to be leading the charge at the moment.

"Suicide Squad 2" is slated for 2019.
