Two teens were killed by a truck in a tragic crash Tuesday in Phelan, California, according to reports. The five young adults had been driving on the freeway when a dump truck ran a stop sign, smashed their car off the road and down an embankment.

The two teens that were killed in the truck crash were Nicole Brittney Lyle, 18, and John Anthony "John John" Cabrera, 16, KTLA reported. The others in the green PT Cruiser were injured, two of them critically. Firefighters said that the dump truck's brakes malfunctioned, leading to the deadly crash.

"The truck exited at Highway 138, came through the stop sign and collided with a green PT Cruiser," Capt. Kyle Hauducoeu of the San Bernardino County Fire Department told KTLA, adding that the truck was on top of the car when they found it.

Lyle and Cabrera died at the scene, and students, teachers, friends and the community gathered Wednesday at Serrano High School for a vigil.

"Every time I think about them all I can see are their smiles," Robert Mineo, a friend, said. "Every single time I looked at Nicole or John John they just had the biggest smile on their face."

"Its crazy how quick life can change. RIP Nicole and John. #RestInPeace," Matt Bynum tweeted.

Shane Gretzner was in the car during the fatal accident but managed to get away with only several broken ribs.

"Considering what (the) car looked like, I shouldn't even be walking," he said, adding that he attended the vigil to thank God for his life.

The two other passengers are currently hospitalized at St. Mary Medical Center. The truck driver was uninjured in the crash and has not been brought up on charges.

The five young adults, all under age 25, had been heading home from a summer day at the beach when the crash occurred.
