'The Berenstain Bears' Debut Two New Titles: A Review

Those loveable Berenstain Bears are back with two new books written and illustrated by Jan and Mike Berenstain. The books are part of the Living Lights series published by Zonderkidz.

In "The Berenstain Bears Help the Homeless," Brother and Sister Bear, along with their friends in the Good Deed Scouts, help restore a home in order to provide housing for the homeless in Bear Country. The book centers on the Bible verse taken from Isaiah 58:7, which states: "Share your food with hungry people. Provide homeless people with a place to stay."

When the Good Deed Scouts get nervous about the amount of work and need encouragement, Cousin Fred notes that the Bible says, "Rescue the weak and the needy."

By the time the home is restored, members of Bear Country are ready to move in and we are reminded to "do right, seek justice, and defend the oppressed." For fans of the Berenstain Bears, this book is a great reminder of the Christian mission to do good for all people (and bears).

The central message of "The Berenstain Bears: Honey Hunt Helpers," is taken from Leviticus 19:3, which reads: "Each of you must respect your mother and father." The Good Deed Scouts are back in this tale of helping the klutzy Papa Bear retrieve honey for a honey competition.

When things go awry, as often do when Papa Bear is involved, the Good Deed Scouts must stick to their faith and biblical teachings in order to keep their eyes on the true prize. It's a heart-warming tale of perseverance and acceptance when things don't always go as planned.

"The Berenstain Bears" debuted in 1962, the creation of a husband and wife duo known fondly as Jan and Stan. Stan passed away in 2005, and Jan died just a few months ago. The latest books still feature Jan's name prominently on the cover, alongside that of the couple's son, Mike.

Mike is continuing on the family's legacy after first starting as an illustrator for the series in 2005. The family made the decision to begin publishing with Zondervan, a leading Christian publishing house, and since then has been producing Christian-themed titles such as "The Berenstain Bears Show God's Love."
