Thomas Nelson, Willow Creek Team Up to Distribute 'Liquid'

The Bible arm of publishing giant Thomas Nelson has partnered with the Willow Creek Association to distribute and market a DVD-based curriculum series for church small groups across the nation.

Created by Jeff Pries and John Ward of Mariners Church in Irvine, Calif., the Liquid curriculum series currently consists of six different DVD kits, each featuring five short films that help connect people to God the way Jesus Christ had – through stories people can relate to.

"In the first century there was no TV, internet or movies. So stories, they were a form of entertainment," explains Pries.

"So a story to them is a movie to us," adds Ward. "That's why we created Liquid."

Building upon the parable teaching style of Jesus, who told stories using everyday characters, each 10-minute episode introduces present-day characters whose problems and struggles mirror biblical stories, illustrating that God's Word is just as true today as when it was written.

"Small Groups and churches are seeking tools that will allow them to become closer to those in their community while digging deep into God's Word," notes Wayne Hastings, senior vice president and group publisher for Thomas Nelson's Bible Group. "The Liquid series is an engaging experience that's perfect for small group study or individual growth."

According to Hastings, Mariners Church has seen the number of small groups increase by 300 percent since it began implementing the Liquid style of study.

"In fact, I've been blessed by the series first-hand as it has promoted healthy discussion amongst my personal small group," he added.

Currently, there are six DVD-based kits – Crossing, Fork in the Road, Live at Five, Mirror Image, Money Talks, The Ten: 1-5 – and more are expected to release in the future.

The DVD kits, which retail for $24.00, each offer videos, a reflection guide, introspective questions, and tips for facilitating a small group. Additional participant's guides are available for $9.99.
