'You Shall Not Steal' – MacBook Thief Caught by Laptop Software

The eighth Commandment God gave in Exodus 20:15 was “You Shall Not Steal”. One thief now wishes he had paid better attention to God’s command, when, after he stole a MacBook laptop, its rightful owner used remote monitoring software installed to take a picture of the thief to give to police.

The amazing story will put the fear of God into anyone contemplating on stealing a laptop.

MacBook owner Joshua Kaufman had installed software “Hidden” as a precautionary measure and never thought he would have to use it. However, when he found his MacBook gone March 21 from his home in Oakland, Ca. he activated the software, which enabled him to track his computer, take screen captures of pages the thief was using, and even allowed him to capture images of the suspect using the laptop’s built in webcam.

By putting the security features of the “Hidden” software into full use, Kaufman was also to go to the police and hand in a clear image of the thief’s face, and evidence of his job and whereabouts.

However, life isn’t that easy! Unbelievably even with all the evidence gathered, police told Kaufman that due to limited resources they were unable to follow-up the case.

Throughout the Bible Christians are told of the importance of persevering, and Kaufman remained undeterred; creating a post on his blog called “This Guy Has My MacBook” to name-and-shame the thief publicly.

Soon, the post had gathered so many followers that Oakland police were forced to do a U-turn and take action. They arrested the thief and found Kaufman’s MacBook in his house.

Kaufman posted on his blog: “ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA! The police used my evidence (email which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up. Nice work OPD!”

Thieves beware and take heed in this new age of technology: “You Shall Not Steal!”
