Verizon Strike Update: 45,000 Employees to Return to Work Monday Night

Communications Workers of America (CWA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), representing some 45,000 employees who went on strike since Aug. 7, reached an agreement with Verizon on Saturday.

After two weeks of demonstrating against the telecommunications company, employees from nine states – Massachusetts to Washington, D.C. – will return to work on Monday night while the terms of the new contract are negotiated with Verizon Communications Inc.

The protest began over health and pension benefits.

CWA and IBEW made a statement on their website reading, "We have reached agreement with Verizon on how bargaining will proceed and how it will be restructured. The major issues remain to be discussed, but overall, issues now are focused and narrowed."

According to The Washington Post, Verizon will quickly resolve "any backlog in repairs or unfulfilled requests" that have risen during the strike period.
