“Run It Up the Flag Pole to See if Anyone Salutes” is a holiday celebrated every Jan. 2. The expression means to put out a new idea to see what people think of it. This year many celebrities had ideas about their New Year resolutions.
The term, which was popular during the 1950’s and 1960’s, has now become a cliché because it is considered out of date. The holiday however, although unofficial, could be well timed as many consider a New Year’s resolution. Some celebrities expressed their 2012 New Year’s resolutions to MTV before the big celebrations began. Tom Delonge of Blink 182 spoke of his desire for a new tattoo on his back.
"I want to get another tattoo," Delonge announced. "But I need to exercise before I get it because I want to be able to show it off and look really awesome.”
If some have resolved to lose weight, music artist Jessie J wants to gain some. "I resolve to have more fun, gain some weight and I want to make a difference in the world,” Jessie J said.
In her efforts to make a difference, Jessie said she would shave her head in 2012 in order to raise more money for charity.
After having a year filled with media and accusations of publicity stunts, Kim Kardashian resolved on her Twitter account that for the New Year she would like to be “more simple.”
Kardashian also advised followers for 2012 to, “Enjoy the little things in life, for someday you will realize they were the big things.”
Even Gov. Mitt Romney had a New Year’s resolution: "This coming year I will endeavor to say thank you more often. Appreciation is an underappreciated quality and too often I think I get a lot of help from folks and I nod my head or move on without stopping and staying thank you, so I want to be more appreciative."
Although none of these celebrities will be running up the flag pole anytime soon, their ideas for a New Year resolution may spark new resolution ideas for others.
