She told reporters at the event that she was "very happy" at receiving the honor and certificate from the Guinness World Records.

She said, "I'm happy. I'm feeling good anyway."

Okawa was pictured at the event sitting in a wheelchair surrounded by relatives, enjoying the attention.

She was born on March 5, 1898 and married in 1919.

Her family at consists of three children, including a son and daughter who are still alive and well and at the moment in their 90s.

She also has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Okawa boasts about never having any major health problems in her 114 years, although she admits that she broke her leg over a decade ago when she was just 102 years old.

The ceremony took place after a 115 year old woman - who was also from Japan - died near Tokyo in January. That woman had been officially recognized as the world's oldest woman in December 2012, after the death of a slightly older American woman who passed away at 115 years of age towards the end of last year.

The world's current oldest living person, according to the Guinness World Records, is also a Japanese man, who is currently 115-year-old and living in Kyoto.
