13 states that may have abortion referendums in 2024

Arizona

Arizona for Abortion Access, the group spearheading the effort to place a constitutional amendment establishing a right to abortion on the ballot in the fall, announced on April 2 that it had collected the required number of signatures to do so.

The advocacy group explained that the Arizona Abortion Access Act “establishes a fundamental right to abortion.”

The proposal would prohibit the state from limiting “access to abortion before fetal viability without establishing that the limitation (1) is solely to protect the health of the patient, (2) doesn’t infringe on their autonomous decision making, and (3) uses only the least restrictive means.”

Supporters note that “The Act protects access to abortion after fetal viability if a treating healthcare provider determines an abortion is needed to protect the life or physical or mental health of the patient, using accepted clinical standards and evidence-based medicine.”

Earlier this month, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that a near-total ban on abortion could go into effect.
