'God' Responds to Senator's Almighty Lawsuit

[-] Text [+]

Less than a week after a Nebraska state senator filed a lawsuit against God, a one-page document marked "Special Appearance" mysteriously appeared at the Douglas County Courthouse in Omaha, a local CBS affiliate reported Wednesday.

This file photo from April 12, 2006, shows Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha during debate in the legislative chamber in Lincoln, Neb. Saying that God has caused 'fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes,' Nebraska's longest-serving state senator says he is suing the Almighty to make a legal point.

"It was on the counter in legal filing yesterday,” Gordon Rieber in the Clerk of the District Court's office told Omaha’s Action 3 News. “No one saw it come in. She (an employee) turned her back and there it was."

In the paper, “God” says the suit by Sen. Ernie Chambers (D-Omaha) should be thrown out because there was “[n]o proper and sufficient service of summons” by a deputy.

And although He doesn’t issue “terroristic threats,” as Chambers had claimed in his lawsuit, “God” wrote that the senator would receive an “appropriate punishment.”

“He is going to take care of the senator by removing him from office next year,” attorney Bill Gallup told Action 3. The CBS affiliate noted that “’God’ apparently has a sense of humor – term limits keep Chambers from serving another term.”

Last Friday, Chambers, considered by many to be one of the Nebraska Legislature’s most controversial and colorful members, filed a lawsuit claiming that God had made “terroristic threats” against him and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

The senator also accused God of causing "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues" and more.

Chambers’ lawsuit asks for a "permanent injunction ordering Defendant to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats."

"It's a lawsuit against a defendant who has perpetrated much harm and damage on the human race," he said on CNN.

Although he is known to skip morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, Chambers said he isn't suing God because he has any kind of personal objections against Him.

The Omaha senator told a local Fox affiliate that his lawsuit is in response to bills brought forth by other state senators to try and stop frivolous lawsuits from being filed.

"The Constitution requires that the courthouse doors be open, so you cannot prohibit the filing of suits," Chambers said. "Anyone can sue anyone they choose, even God."

And the senator says he is able to sue God because the “defendant, being omnipresent, is personally present in Douglas County."

Regarding the one-page document that mysteriously appeared in the Clerk of the District Court's office, Gallup, a longtime defense attorney, said, “It looks to me like a legitimate document that would have to be sustained by the judge," also noting that “God” has a good strategy.

Several attorneys that were interviewed denied writing the document, but said they're available if God needs them in court.

"He (God) hasn't called me yet!" defense attorney James Martin Davis told Action 3.

According to KETV.com, Chambers is asking for the court to grant him a summary judgment or, as an alternative, for the judge to set a date for a hearing as expeditiously as possible and enter a permanent injunction.

Please some of you said the senator is an enemy of God. He is not. God has no enemys for he loves all. The senator is not trying to disrespect God. He is just trying to show that unneccessary laws are passed. God forgives him as you should also

Man is God's creation. He created us in His image. Now man can choose to make God His enemy by disobedience and rebellion. This brought about the fall of man. Jesus Christ restored mankind back to the relationship we enjoyed before the fall. However, not all of mankind believes God. That is the greatest sin to me, to see the way this world is, and to disbelieve Almighty God. God did not get man into this mess as the Senator has stated. Man makes his own choices to do evil and to cause harm on the earth.
So what should be our Father's response, He should just allow mankind to continue to do the things that mankind does. This is GOD's creation, He is allowed do with it as HE so chooses, and HE is not accountable to any of us, we are accountable to HIM! Try reading the Book of JOB and learn a lesson from that esteemed brother!
We all fall short of the glory of God, the blood of Christ washes us clean, if we accept what Jesus did on the cross, not everyone accepts this, as they choose to walk in rebellion.
Man is not our enemy either, our enemy is NOT flesh and blood, and we would do well to remember that! We do have a real enemy brethren, it's not flesh! How about praying for the Senator and all those who do not choose Jesus Christ, that is the true issue! In Jesus Name and For HIS Glory!

God, in various times and ways has spoken to men.....well, watch and see what happens next. If nothing, you know that God is yet merciful to our nation. IF something, then we all will see the end of the matter really soon. Could this thing be the Abomination of Desolation (beginnings)? Woe unto the inhabitants of the earth.....pray that your flight doesn't take place in the winter!

Um, I really want to know this...Can you sue someone you don't believe in...? if he doesn't believe God exists, then by him suing God, he must, in fact, believe God exists...God is in total control

I think that what the Senator did by filing the lawsuit was actually an act of faith. It takes lots of faith in God to be able to be angry with Him. However, I think the courts consider God an "alleged defendant" until He is proven guilty!

I'm not one that usually makes comments on subject matter that I read. Having said that, I can not remain silent on this one! Yes God is the things that the Senator says, however, God tells us that our tongue is our greatest enmy. There are repeated times in the our history were god gave us a choice between his way and our way, we seem to choose our way and look where we are. As far as the reading I have done there is only one unforgiving sin and that " IS DENIENG THE LORD GOD AS OUR SAVIOR." As for myself, I am gratefull that he is a forgiving god because I often ask and receive his forgivness. As a result of our choices we will forever be sinners. So I guess we can't expect better from the Senator. My suggestion to him is to read god's word 1st, ask for his forgivness 2nd, and last choose his words wisely !!!

Legally Senator Chambers is well within his limits. I find it hard to believe that such a man with such beliefs would in fact file this lawsuit if he was religous. No matter how much people say that thier actions do not reflect thier personal beliefs, one cannot help but notice that they do somehow seep through.

Senator Chambers is actually an enemy of God, not just for doing this irreverent thing but for fighting for anything and everything that is ungodly and un-Christian. He's a leading proponent for the gays in Nebraska, he fights the death penalty as much as he can and I've never heard a single good thing that I can think of about him.

I personally don't know if it is a reall letter, but God can do whatever He wants. I cannot believe the circus that people are turning this into. God is not a joking matter; He gave us life and to mock HIm is disgusting.
