The mayor of San Diego said Wednesday that he has changed his stance on same-sex marriages after revealing that his adult daughter is a lesbian.
Although he previously said he would veto a city council resolution supporting a legal fight to overturn California's prohibition on same-sex marriage, Mayor Jerry Sanders told reporters that he could no longer support the position he took during his mayoral campaign two years ago and in the end signed the resolution.
"Two years ago, I believed that civil unions were a fair alternative," he said at a news conference.
Sanders' spokesman, Fred Sainz, had earlier informed the press that the mayor prefers civil unions which offer some, but not all of the legal privileges found in marriages over same-sex marriages.
"Those beliefs, in my case, have since changed, the Republican mayor said Wednesday.
Sanders, who is up for re-election next year, acknowledged that many voters who supported his earlier stance may disagree, but he said he had to do what he believed was right.
According to the mayors spokesman, Sanders daughter Lisa told her parents four years ago that she is a lesbian and is in a committed relationship.
But her orientation wasn't public until her father's speech, Sainz said.
The announcement came one day after San Diegos city council voted 5-3 to join other California cities in stating support for same-sex marriage in a case to be decided by the state Supreme Court. The court is considering whether California's ban on same-sex "marriage" is unconstitutional.
Although a 4-4 vote on the issue two weeks ago had killed the measure, Councilwoman Toni Atkins had called for another chance, arguing that state residents should be treated equally regardless of their sexual orientations.
What tipped the scale on Tuesday was the vote by Donna Frye, one of the panels most liberal members. Frye had voted against the motion on Sept. 4 because she felt the public had not been given adequate opportunity to comment.
I just learned about this issue when I picked up the city council docket on Wednesday, right before the Labor Day holiday, Frye had said, according to the California Catholic Daily. I think its a very significant issue, and I think its a very important issue, and I think that the public has a right to have their voices heard, whether its for it or against it.
As the mayors spokesman had noted, 62 percent of city voters had backed Proposition 22, the statewide measure that bars California from acknowledging same-sex "marriages" performed in other states.
After the councils three-hour debate, however, Frye switched sides, placing San Diego en route to joining Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Jose and Santa Cruz, which have already expressed their support for same-sex marriages.

I was under the impression that you were telling people they should go with what their hearts were telling them even if it compermissed what the word of God said. I understand their was a misunderstanding. You as I stand strong being against sam-sex marriage and following the only true truth which is the compleate and unchangable word of God.
God bless
Orlos Girl,
I guess once you start, it is hard to stop commenting on comments. Do they still teach READING COMPREHENSION in school today? First Mr. Harpers and now your comments make me wonder. I have to ask you are you a registered voter? Did you vote in the last elections? Are you just like many other "Christians" who vote by their party affiliation regardless of what the candidate stands for?
What good do all of these so called protests do? Instead of protesting, why not vote for candidates that believe in the Bible? I guess it is just so much easier to protest AFTER atheists, moral degenerates, abortionists, or Christian haters, and the like are elected into office. My point is for Christians to register to vote and then, to vote for God fearing candidates. If you think that protesting will make these ungodly people change their views, then you are completely mistaken.
So, put down your protest signs and do what the abortionists, same sex marriage proponents, gays, lesbians, womens lib, and every other God-less degenerate group has done to take over the political system in America, they VOTE! If 60% of America is supposed to be Christian and IF they voted, then the Executive Branches, Legislative Branches, and the Judicial Branches of government nationwide would be led by God fearing men and women who would uphold our Constitution as written. They would stop selling out America to ever minority fringe group that rears its ugly head.
In paragraph 4 of my comments regarding Mayor Sanders decision to do the right thing, even though he almost did not, I said stop protesting and vote for people who will do the right thing; and if they do not do what they were elected to do, then vote them out of office.
Nowhere in the Bible did Jesus or His disciples protest and march against the ungodly. No, they acted to make changes in society and in the world. God established America on Biblical principles by placing God fearing men in position to make decisions for America by voting for them. All we have to do today is do the same and vote to take America back, not protest, not march, not make signs, and whine and cry about how bad things have become.
Prayer is preparation for battle, but you must still step on the battlefield. The battle is the Lords and victory is ours, but we have to first show up for the battle. Remember, there were 300,000 Israelite soldiers surrounding the battlefield, but none would step on the battlefield to fight Goliath. King David (he was already anointed King by Samuel) showed up and ran to the battlefield. God delivered Goliath into King Davids hands. I believe that God will deliver America back into our hands, but first we have to run to the battlefields on Election Day and fight with our vote.

To "Pastor" Leo;
I don't understand how a man who professes to be a "man of God" can ask people to stop protesting against the slaughter of unborn children. How can a person NOT fight against such a thing?
Unborn children are the most vulnerable members of our society. Their murder will be avenged by God, make no mistake in believing otherwise.
As for same-sex "marriage", it's NOT marriage. Jesus says clearly what marriage is supposed to be:
"He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them MALE and FEMALE'' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate." (Matthew 19:4-6)
"But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." (Mark 10:6-9).
The term "from the beginning" means that God established what marriage is from the foundation of the world. It is an unalterable truth that is weaved into the fabric of creation. It cannot be changed any more than the size or the orbit of the Earth can be changed.

I usually don't reply to anything but the article, however, since I don't think you understood what I wrote I will respond to your comment.
The Mayor is an elected official not clergy. I don't know if he believes in Jesus or has accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Besides, his salvation is between himself and the Lord. My reference is to the law and the enforcement of it based on what the voters in San Diego have decided. I would never agree with anyone that chose to enforce abortion or the same sex agenda, even if they said they were Christian.
My comments are directed toward the Mayor's decision to do what is and was the right thing to do in the first place. He was elected by people who do not support same sex marriage and he should therefore take a stand with the voters, WHICH HE DID! What lukewarm decision did he make? He shared his thinking on the issue because of his daughter, but his final decision was crystal clear. He made the right decision, in my opinion, both morally and legally.
It is unfortunate that you feel that I am leading him and others astray by giving non-Biblical advice. Of course, that would depend on what Bible you are referring to. My advice is based on the Word of God that says "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination..." Leviticus 18:22; and "Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting" Romans 1:27-28. NKJV
God bless you to for taking the time to make a comment. It shows that you are willing to take a stand and not just observe.

HOW ABOUT YOU STAND FOR THE WORD OF GOD AND STOP COMPERMISSING. "I RATHER Y OU BE COLD THEN LUKEWARM".
REV3:16 So, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth! DOESNT THE WORD OF GOD SAY NOT TO COMPERMISE TO THIS WORLDS WAY OF DOING THINGS. YOU SHOULD BE CAREFULL WHAT YOU TELL PEOPLE IS OK "PASTOR"
I am glad that Mayor Sanders changed his mind and did what was right both morally and legally. I do understand his emotional reaction to his daughters life choices. What father would not want to protect his daughter or give her what she appears to desire. However, his love for her did not change because he did what was right. His decision actually, has nothing to do with being her father. His decision has to do with upholding the law.
America is a Republic, a nation governed by laws. America is a Democracy, a nation whose laws are determined by the MAJORITY of those who vote LEGALLY. The mayor has a right to cast his vote any way he chooses, but he does not have the right to overrule the vote of 62% of the voting public. If 62% of the people do not want marriage to include same sex couples, then that is the law. Enforce it!
As far as his re-election goes, if 62% of the people support Mayor Sanders, as they should because he upheld their choice, then he should easily win if he runs for mayor again. However, as more and more people stay home and surrender the vote to those who oppose everything that America stands for, then do not complain when the MINORITY takes over in San Diego and other major cities.
Please, stop marching and protesting against abortion, same sex marriage, and illegal immigration. Stop marching and protesting and start voting in politicians who will uphold the will of the majority of the people, which just happens to be called the LAW. If you wont vote and stand for what you believe in, then keep quiet and sit and watch as the fabric of society comes apart. The destruction of family and family values is the destruction of society.
Mayor Sanders did what was moral, legal, and right. It seems he is a lone man of courage, standing on his convictions, in a State where its major cities are choosing to ignore its own laws. I hope some of his courage and strength rubs off on some of his fellow mayors as well as on the Governor of the State.
Stand for something or fall for anything!
God bless you Mayor Sanders,

PRSTEV11 you are so correct. This man compermissed the true word of God show how he feels about a loved one. He showed his daughter that she is more important to him than God. But isn't that what we are suppose to do? When a family member is doing something that is clearley going against the word of God we are suppose to show love and kindness and put that family member first and God second. My god its that mans daughter. Daddys little girl.Aren't we suppose to compermise the truth for a lie to show how much we love that person. That we are being a good christian and loving them no matter what the cost even if its going against God. After all showing Love is the key thing right?
Mark 10:29 So Jesus answered and said, Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[a] or children or lands, for My sake and the gospels,
Matthew 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Wonderful. I cannot express how touching it was to hear Sanders speak about his daughter. The ability to look at those different from us and yet see ourselves is what Christianity is all about. All Sanders saw when he looked at his daughter and her partner was a love indistinguishable from the love he has for his partner. That's why those quotes don't belong there. Marriage is marriage. Love is love.
No, Jerry Sanders just simply caved to his sinful daughter and put her above what was right. That's not the right thing to do and he won't be blessed for it. He's turned his back on the City of San Diego.
I don't think Jerry Sanders was supporting same-sex "marriage", as stated in the article. He supports same-sex marriage (without the quotes). He wants the same rights for his daughter as everyone else. Seems like a nice idea.
