Analysis: Why Muslims Follow Jesus

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

The number of new Christians in the world each year surpasses that of new Muslims, with the major growth for Protestants coming through conversion.

Delegates of Malaysia ruling party United Malays National Organization(UMNO) pray during the Malaysia ruling party United Malays National Organization(UMNO) general assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007. Malaysia's leader on Wednesday urged the country's majority Muslims to respect other religions, delivering a strong plea for racial unity amid fears that rising ethic tensions could wreck decades of economic progress.

And the experience that most influenced Muslims was the lifestyle of Christians, according to a recently released survey that offers a glimpse into why Muslims are opening their hearts to the Gospel and Jesus Christ.

The survey, conducted by Fuller Theological Seminary’s School of Intercultural Studies between 1991 to 2007 among 750 Muslims that had decided to follow Christ, was able to track some influences that helped the converts make their decision. The respondents were from 30 countries and 50 ethnic groups – representing every major region of the Muslim world.

According to the survey, some participants said that they saw no discrepancy between what Christians preached and what they practiced in their lives.

An Egyptian said he recognized the contrast between the love of a Christian group at an American university and the unloving ways of Muslim students and faculty at a university in Medina, according to an article on the survey featured in Christianity Today magazine.

Others noted that Christians treat women as equals and Christians have loving marriages.

“Many Muslims who faced violence at the hands of other Muslims did not see it in the Christians they knew…,” wrote the survey’s authors – Dr. J. Dudley Woodberry, Russell G. Shubin, and G. Marks – in Christianity Today. “Muslim-on-Muslim violence has led to considerable disillusionment for many Muslims….”

The next most important influence was the power of God to answer prayers as well as healing. These revelations of God include supernatural intervention such as Christian prayers healing disabled people when Muslims could not and deliverance from demonic powers.

The third most popular influence listed by respondents was dissatisfaction with the Islam they have followed. The former Muslims said they were unhappy with the Qur’an, which they said emphasized God’s punishment more than His love and the use of violence to impose Islamic laws.

“This disillusionment is broad in the Muslim world. Many Iranians became interested in the gospel after the Khomeini revolution of 1979 brought in rule by clergy. Pakistanis became more receptive after President Zia ul-Haq (1977-1988) tried to implement Islamic law. And Afghans became more open after Islamist Taliban conquest and rule (1994-2001),” the authors noted.

It is also noteworthy that more than one in four respondents (27 percent) said dreams and visions were a factor in their decision to commit themselves to follow Christ. For 40 percent of respondents, visions or dreams occurred at the time of conversion, and for 45 percent they occurred after they committed to following Christ.

Moreover many converts were attracted to the assurance of salvation and forgiveness. In Islam, God forgives and punishes whoever He will so Muslims have no certainty of salvation. But in Christianity, a person can be sure of their salvation if they place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Muslims who read the Bible were also convinced that the Bible is the truth and were attracted to the unconditional love of God.

The survey noted that although the number of new Christians each year is greater than the number of new Muslims, the annual growth rate of Muslims (1.81 percent), however, is higher than for Christians (1.23 percent), according to the article.

The Islamic studies expert said the higher Muslim growth rate is “hardly surprising” because there is a larger Christian population so more people need to become Christians for the growth rate to increase.

Editor’s Note: J. Dudley Woodberry is a professor of Islamic studies at the School of Intercultural Studies, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif., and served in the Muslim world for many years. Russell G. Shubin is the deputy director of national news and publications for Salem Communications in Camarillo, Calif. G. Marks has ministered in Malawi.

    BobC,

Pedro wrote that over 6 billion people in the world need Jesus.

When you responded, you gave your provocative assertions after you asked, "Prove it." Your assertions were:

    • I say that's total nonsense.
    • I say it's disgusting you think Jesus is a big deal. Jesus is dead and he decomposed into nothing many centuries ago.
    • Prove your dead Jesus has any value.
    • Every single belief of Christianity is a myth that has no evidence and couldn't possibly be true.
    • People are brainwashed to believe it and their religion would be obsolete if anyone knew the truth about it.

Not once did you broach the subject of how you prove anything from history or in contemporary experience. What is the nature of proof in historiography? My friend was a conman and a rebellious thief. When the Gospel of Jesus Christ, verified historically in his death and resurrection, was proclaimed, George received the living Christ into his life and became a radically changed family man over night, but with growth in sanctification as he lived the Christian life.

If Christianity is total nonsense, why didn't you set out to prove historically that this is so. How is mythology defined historically versus historical facts?

If I set out to prove that Jesus not only has value but also transforms lives, what evidence would you accept? Your resistance seems to indicate that no matter what evidence I present for Jesus, his life, death and resurrection, and how he transforms human lives for the better, you would not receive it.

I am writing on this topic at this computer because the living Jesus has transformed my life from a radical, good for nothing rebel, to a Christian who has been changed from the inside out. But from the content of what you write, there is little hope that you are open to the evidence historically or existentially. What is fueling your kind of antagonism?

After more than 1o years working between Muslims in Central Asia, I’ve witnessed several friends telling stories of Jesus appearing them in dreams and guiding them to the Truth. We know the truth is not a religion, or a doctrine. The truth is a Person. But as the article says, there's nothing as powerful as the testimony. When they see the difference, they ask, and wonder why we have this special relation with God, that reflects in our family. You can not forfeit this relation. You have life, or you are a talking dead (nothing personal to someone you know). So, praise God for our new brothers and sisters in the Muslim world, beautiful people, great cultures, coming to know He who loves them.

Welcome new converts to Christianity. Praise God, Jesus lives in all of us. He left his teachings and the Holy Spirit to guide us in our daily lives. If you accept Jesus Christ as your savior then your life begins to change. You enable the Holy Spirit to work in your life. Purging is a time for testing, and many people fail at this point. God will test all new products before they can work for the kingdom. God knows your heart so if you come correct he will bless you, but if you don't you get nothing but another lesson. I find people who don't accept Jesus as their Savior is because they treat God like a fast food restaurant. Ordering all kinds of things and expect him to bless them right away... Stop treating God like Mc Donald's, we are the only ones concerned with time and wearing watches.. If time was so important to God, we all would be dead for wasting his time.

May God bless you and keep seeking God for wisdom and understand...

Is BobC a Muslim or a satanist? He is so vitriolic about us and our Lord Jesus Christ. I tremble for this individual. God have mercy on his soul. He reminds me of an article I was reading this morning on "the Law of the Garbage Truck". It's about people who carry a lot of life's garbage around with them and who look for opportunities to dump their garbage on unsuspecting individuals. And the article says that we should be on the look-out for people who are garbage trucks and not allow them to dump on us. The article says that the most effective way of dealing with such people is to wave to them, smile, wish them good day and move on! You will be happier that way. May God bless all those who continue to post unkind comments about Christians on this site. God bless you too my brothers and sisters in Christ and thank you for trying so valiantly to defend us all and to keep these debates interesting.

What are you Christians so afraid of? Why are so terrified of the truth you censor it? What's the problem with you people? I want to know what's going on here with all this censorship.

This sure is a nice artilce about Muslims getting saved. God loves them as much as He does anyone else. Thanks of the wonderful article. We all need the blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Over 6 billion people in the whole world need the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Whoever is responsible for censoring my comments, I would like to ask you, why are you so afraid of people who tell the truth? Censorship is extremely immoral. Whoever is so afraid of honesty that he erases it, should be ashamed of himself.

I think our King's words say it best; " A new commandment I give to you, love one another as I have loved you. By this the world will know you are my disciples, that you love one another" (John 13).

    Grace and Peace,
    Jim

What exactly is inappropriate about telling the truth?

It is a very interesting and touching article. Even though the Muslim community was one of the
hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ, not they are gradually opening their hearts to hear the good news that Jesus came to save them too. If the Christians will read Koran and
present the gospel taking some of the passages from Koran can easily open dialogue with a
Muslim friend, it is very easy to draw their attention to the claims of Jesus Christ.

Thousands of young Muslims are coming to Christain faith in the war torn Kashmir area of India,
also in other parts of India. There are hundreds of evangelists in India who were Muslims.
The Church of Jesus Christ has the best and greatest opportunity at this critical hour of history
to reachout Muslims and followers of other religions. It must be done through love,
passion and respect toward their religion.

It's not about religion, but about faith in our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and having a personal relationship with Him directly.

This should be a reminder to us all to pray that God continue to work in the lives of our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world to lead them to Christ.

Jesus says that 'I am the Way, Truth and the Life, no ones goes to the Father except through Me'

Muslims recognize the power of The One True God, and they recognize the impotence of 'Allah'
