'Bible's Buried Secrets' Trailer Hits YouTube

By Josh Kimball|Christian Post Reporter

Weeks after news broke of the upcoming PBS program “The Bible’s Buried Secrets,” the trailer for the two-hour television special made its YouTube debut Sunday, adding more fuel to a controversy that has already generated a flurry of intense and sometimes heated debates.

“In 1896, near the banks of the Nile in southern Egypt, one of the most important discoveries in biblical archaeology is unearthed,” begins the three-and-a-half-minute trailer.

The program claims to converge science and history “to create an extraordinary new story of an ancient people – a new story of the Bible.”

“An archaeological detective story pieces together clues that paint an extraordinary picture of who wrote the Bible, when, and why,” the trailer’s narrator says.

The trailer is notably tamer than the presentation for the program last month during the Summer 2008 Television Critics Association Tour (TCA), which brought dozens of reporters and critics to Beverly Hills to get a taste of a broad array of upcoming TV programs.

During the session for “The Bible’s Buried Secretes,” panelist and Bible scholar William G. Dever characterized the Bible as a "minority report" that "[i]f we insist on reading ... literally, in 25 years, nobody will read it any longer."

The PBS program, on the other hand, is "a shocking film in many ways, but it’s truth, revolutionary, and it’s as fresh as yesterday,” said Dever, who specializes in the history of Israel, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Producers of PBS's science series Nova say the film has “new discoveries that shake the foundation of biblical archaeology,” echoing claims by other contested documentaries such as “The Lost Tomb of Jesus,” which aired last year on The Discovery Channel.

The two-hour PBS special attempts to delve into the origins of the Israelites to explore their gradual transformation into a monotheistic people. It attempts to uncover who wrote the Hebrew Bible and whether it’s history or parable.

Furthermore, the show poses provocative ideas – including the “revelation,” as the trailer’s narrator calls it, that many Israelites believed that God had a wife – and disputes literal readings of the text.

News of the upcoming program, which broke out after the July 13 preview, was quickly disseminated across the world-wide web, prompting the conservative American Family Association to pass around a petition urging Congress to stop using tax dollars to fund PBS.

“PBS is knowingly choosing to insult and attack Christianity by airing a program that declares the Bible ‘isn't true and a bunch of stories that never happened,’” signers of the petition are encouraged to declare to members of Congress.

Archeologist Dever – who said he has participated in two dozen films about the Bible, most of which, he said, were “dreadful” – predicted that there would be those who “are not going to like this film.”

“It’s a waste of time to argue with fundamentalists,” Dever said, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “And this film doesn’t do it. It’s designed for intelligent people who are willing to change their mind.”

Among highlights of "The Bible's Buried Secrets," as noted by the AFA:

• The Old Testament was written in the sixth century BC and hundreds of authors contributed.
• Abraham, Sarah and their offspring didn't exist.
• There is no archaeological evidence of the Exodus.
• Monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years.
• The Israelites were actually Canaanites.

“The Bible’s Buried Secrets,” is set to air Nov. 18 on the PBS.

Is there any evidence in support of the Exodus? Did it really happen? Ph.D. scientist Gerald E. Aardsma has studied and written on the Exodus for many years. He has some compelling evidence which shows that the Exodus did indeed happen! If you are looking for factual, scientific data, Dr. Aardsma has a book regarding the Exodus that you can order by going to this link: http://www.biblicalchronologist.org/products/Exodus_book.php.

"This line says it all, how embarrassing! ... and the only element left is faith."

    So?

Why are you trying to 'beat the Illogicals'? You are funny. Even if you were 100% right about every thing you've ever written in here... so what? What does it amount to? It's so... masterbatory.

I love you, although I hate what you do. You remind me of how I used to think. It is painful to watch.

    Prayerfully,

    Brother Aaron

agent, could you be more specific with what you mean in your paragraph on faith, it may just be me but I totally lost your point as I read it, thanks, believer.

    Daniel Paul,

    * If they get public fundage isn't this a violation of separation of church and state as it takes an anti-christian view? It*

PBS is publically funded, (not directly by the Govt. though)., and therefore they can promote or object to any views they want. What isn’t allowed according to the constitution is when the Govt. directly, or purposely attempts to oppress religion, and equally with religion directly oppressing Govt. So, these archeological studies were intended to find evidence either confirming or rebuking history, part of it from where the biblical message originates. I can imagine had the evidence been the other way around, you and others here would no object to it at all.

    * Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.*

This line says it all, how embarrassing! It is exactly what I was referring to earlier. Any amount of counter evidence, no matter how great or substantial, it would not matter as in the end, you have the faith card. How illogical. In ever day life you life your lives completely and accordingly to logic, but then when it comes to religion, you compartmentalize it, so logic cannot enter it the equation and the only element left is faith.

    Amen Macman....

Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

2Corinthians 5:7 - "(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)"

Revelation 14:12 - "Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."

Interesting that PBS would air this program. If they get public fundage isn't this a violation of separation of church and state as it takes an anti-christian view? It is religion cloked in 'history'.

I am not accustomed to learning about my faith from sources such as PBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, etc. The WORD of God will never return void. This has nothing to do with the position of the reader. It is a spiritual law. I will never feel threatened by the conjecture of the media regarding the foundations of my faith.

agent, you're correct it doesn't seem plausible that someone would make a statement like that, but Voltaire made a similar statement in his day as well.

  • Fri Aug 15, 2008 10:26 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    Prophet ,

I could see how it could interpeted the other way, but that doesn't seem right, I mean really to make a bold statement like no one would be reading it in 25 years isn't plausable. No, it seems his words meant that if one chooses to read it in a literal viewpoint, that it would be quite difficult to rationalize it with how archelogical and science shows otherwise. Not that it totally is contradicted in all instances.

Denver is stating that IF one is reading it from a literalist view point, as in all historical, scientific fact, that it would be quite hard to justify it being read in this manner (literally) within 25 years.

In the end, it doesn't matter if a show like this comes up, or if no evidence is ever found for the exodus and tons of other biblical tales, as in the end they are taken on faith, which means lack of evidence or even contrdictory evidence will be ignored and rationalized anyway.

    agent orange,
No...he was saying that we would literally not be reading it in 25 years. notice where the ... is.

"...in 25 years, no one will be reading it."
Yeah, yeah...the same thing thats been said for over 2000 years. Oh, but wait! They were only kings, scientists, philosophers, atheists, leaders, etc, etc....they weren't Dever! He's different!

  • Thu Aug 14, 2008 1:40 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Would everyone please read the Bible leterally for the next 25 years and let me know what happens. Thanks

  • Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:36 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Yes, it may change the minds of some so-called "intelligent" people, but the real problem for Mr. Dever is that it won't change God's mind or will nor God's Word.

    john14-6,

Details my friend, it is all in the details.

*[i]f we insist on reading ... LITERALLY, in 25 years, nobody will read it any longer.*

    (My emphasize added)

Note, Denver is remarking that only if it is read LITERALLY, will his expected outcome occur. Literally, as in the universe/earth are a mere 6000 years old, or that all languages exist from the tower or Babel, or that a worldwide Noachian flood wiped nearly all organisms 4000 years ago, or that Jonah was in a whale for 3 days, and so on.

tpique1 - The Biblical texts were written over a period covering 3,500 years ago to 1900 years ago.
I'm pretty sure that the Book of Job is the oldest text. As with most Biblical texts, the author is unknown.

"...in 25 years, no one will be reading it."

One should remind Mr. Dever that Voltaire held a Bible over his head and said that in 100 years no one would be reading it. Less than 50 years later, the Geneva Bible Society was publishing Bibles in what was once Voltaire's home.

"minority report" that "[i]f we insist on reading ... literally, in 25 years, nobody will read it any longer."

The Bible was written 2000 years ago and has changed the lives of millions of people over the centuries, and IT'S STILL CHANGING LIVES.

Sorry it hasn't changed yours Dever. Maybe the Bible isn't the problem, but you are.

Every godless debunker has come and gone but the Bible and the God who inspired (wrote) it's pages still remains eternal.

    Sensationalism.

Scholars have detected late scriptural insertions and revisions involved in what has come to be known as "Deuteronomistic History". However, because some portions of Scripture were produced at a later date does not mean that they are spurious. Scholars except that the Deuteronomists worked with far older texts and with oral tradition.

Revisionist and minimalist scholars have attracted considerable notice by denying the existence of many major religious figures including Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Lao-Tzu, Zoroaster, and even Jesus. Most figures, religious or secular, mentioned in ancient sources left no independent sources. That does not mean that they should be dismissed as fiction.

The further back in history you explore the harder it is to find any archeological evidence. However, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
Israel is not always Monotheistic, this is clear in scripture. However, their was always a Monotheistic sect within Judaism. The prophets were complaining about pluralism after all.

Israel wasn't always a nation and the Canaan was a large civilization. Israel being mixed in or coming from Canaan isn't surprising or that much of a revelation. When it comes down to it, we all come from the same origin.

It seems that every couple of years, someone "discovers" ... or invents something REVOLUTIONARY :^) WOW! HURRAY!
And it used to shake my faith from time to time ... but the track record for the Teaser/Trailer VS. Presentation always ends up being an admission of hype.

Noone is ever going to be able to destroy the word of God. Furthermore, despite the tendency for "timely prophetical parallels" made by some to have already passed in earlier centuries ... the time is drawing nearer to when the prophetic books of the Bible will be absolutely indisputable ... except by the most deceived.

Jesus Christ's return and events leading to it will contradict everything the world "knows" about creation, history, and itself.

    Come soon dear Lord.

People doubted if the Hittites existed, but archeology has shown they did (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hittites).

People wanted to doubt that Hebrew existed in written form long enough to have written the Old Testament. Archeology has shown it to have existed 1000BC. Archeology has shown the existence of King Zedekiah (Jeremiah 21:3) at the time of the first temple. The same is true for King Jehoiakim (2 Kings 24:6). Another attempt for ratings and for stardom. This will draw believers who want to watch to find points to argue and unbelievers who want to watch to strengthen their denial of God's existence.
