Christians Condemn Westboro Hatred

By Jenna Lyle|Christian Today Reporter

LONDON – Six Christian organizations have unanimously condemned plans by the Westboro Baptist Church to picket in the United Kingdom.

The Kansas-based church, notorious for its “God hates Fags” banners, said it was planning to picket a performance of The Laramie Project in Basingstoke on Friday.

The play tells the story of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay student who was tortured and murdered near Laramie, Wyo.

The UK Border Agency has banned the church’s pastor, Fred Phelps, and his daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, from entering the UK on the grounds that they intend to incite hatred.

Phelps-Roper told BBC News Online, however, that other members of the church who are lesser known to the authorities were going to attempt to enter the UK to stage the protest as planned.

"There are members of WBC that are not named Phelps," she told the BBC. “So they (the authorities) might have their work cut out for them. Unless they intend to begin checking the bare backsides of every person coming into that country to find that tattoo that says 'Property of WBC' – they will have no way of identifying who is from WBC."

The church posted a video on its website in response to the ban, in which Phelps said, “God hates the United Kingdom.” He also stated that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith had “blasphemed against God Almighty” by denying the WBC entry to the UK.

The Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Evangelical Alliance, Faithworks, the Methodist Church, theology thank tank Theos, and the United Reformed Churches denounced Westboro’s theology and its proposed picket.

“We are dismayed that members of Westboro Baptist Church (based in Kansas, USA and not associated with the Baptist Union of Great Britain) might picket the performance of The Laramie Project in Basingstoke on Friday,” they said.

"We do not share their hatred of lesbian and gay people. We believe that God loves all, irrespective of sexual orientation, and we unreservedly stand against their message of hate toward those communities."

"Neither the style nor substance of their preaching expresses the historic, orthodox Christian faith," they added. "And we ask that the members of Westboro Baptist Church refrain from stirring up any more homophobic hatred in the UK or elsewhere."

Westboro Baptist Church’s membership consists mainly of relatives of Phelps. The church has sparked outrage in the United States for its pickets outside the funerals of dead soldiers and aggressive campaigning against homosexuality.

God hates all sins, but he loves sinners. If in doubt, then John 3:16 should answer all naysayers.

    Chicago,
You've posted some intriguing notions. Your connection of the Hindu doctrine of karma has a neat connection to Gal. 6: 7, the verse you cited. But karma is an amoral reckoning of human conduct, discounting notions of sin as sin. Paul had recently in this letter expanded on human depravity (Gal. 5: 19-21) counter-balanced by the workings of the Holy Spirit (5: 22, 23). In this light, karmaic thought has only a surface similarity and is essentially not at all the same with Christian teachings on morality.
You also had an excellent thought later on: What in the world makes one automatically a non-believer if they are homosexual?
What if the homosexual was celebate?
Consider this in this manner: If I was a Republican, and voted straight (excuse the pun) Democratic Party, would I be realy a Republican? The nature of homosexuality is in the act, thus all the posters who insisted that Christians focus on God's hatred on sin are accurate. Confirmed, defended sin is as abominable, and it is concern for the cause of one's soul and eternal salvation that motivates such "attacks" against the homosexual community. Can't anybody see that such motivation cold be love.
Phelps mis-steped, failing to see this compulsion of loving concern. Too much hell-fire. Too little seeking and saving.

"Matthew Shepard is in eternal hell fire now and will never get out."

I see, so you've created an immoral god in your own image, strange I thought Christians believed the exact opposite.

And dis I will continue to pray for you. But I challenge you to read the Gospel of John. And any questions you have for me we can discuss them via email or some other format and I will gladly answer any questions or qualms you have about Christianity. :-)

Those six churches should be ashamed of themselves. How many straight children have been molested and murdered by homosexuals like you? A lot. How many Christians have been assaulted by homosexuals like you because you didn't like the way they voted? A lot. How many Christian churches have been burned down by homosexuals like you because you disagree with the Holy Bible? A lot. Matthew Shepard is in eternal hell fire now and will never get out.
Whatever you think, you will not be able to change God's Word and will one day have to pay the price for not believing what God has written.

Sin is sin no matter what it is, stealing is just as bad as practicing homosexuality, however as Christians we are to condemn the behavior not the people. By condemning the people you actually turn them away from Christ because that kind of hatred shown toward these people gives no honor or glory to GOD in any way shape form or fashion. It actually makes people second guess GOD thus the comment disbeliever made after your remarks.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

    Romans 1:22-27

V22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, V23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

V24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

V25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, Who is blessed for ever. Amen.

V26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

V27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

SAY THIS PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I am a sinner and am headed to eternal hell because of my sins. I believe you died on the cross to take away my sins and to take me to heaven. Jesus, I ask you now to come into my heart and take away my sins and give me eternal life. http://www.armyofgod.com

He and his crew continually pester us at our Annual Southern Baptist Convention Meeting every year.

I pray that this Phelps repents one day. Him and His congregation. They lie about the true nature God, thus smearing His holy name. "Let him be accursed," says the apostle Paul. I believe that homosexuality is a sin, and on the same level that fornication, adultery, beastiality and pedophilia are. Why not go picket one of those sins too? This man's an imbicile, and I'm ashamed of him. Too bad they've used the title 'Baptist.' I'm finding it really hard to be forgiving... God loved the whole world, and that includes homosexuals. God hates sin, and that includes homosexuality. Do the math, Phelps.

Cowboy: Perhaps a little comparative religion might be in order. Karma is a universal religious concept and the Christians certainly use it as evidenced by the scripture, "What ye sow, so shall ye reap." That's a perfect example of karmic law.

What if the homosexual was celebate?

Karma is some made up word unbelievers use. They want to believe that something in this world will deliver justice but it won't be karma but the Lord Jesus Christ will soon. He is giving us his grace right now but soon you unbelievers will receive His wrath. We believers are not anti-gay but anti-sin. We hope these people from this "church" will come to a knowledge of Him just as we hope the homosexuals will come to Him and believe. Only the gospel and it's power can overcome sin.

Thomas: Good point. Some of the people who post anti-gay rants on here, rather than being shrewd gay advocates, are actually in danger of making Christiany quite repugnant. I certainly wouldn't want their karma.

  • Fri Feb 20, 2009 12:09 pm Agree: 3   Disagree: 2

chicago24, under that theory perhaps some of the commenters who obsessively post here whenever there is a gay-related thread are also shrewd gay advocates. They certainly put forward unsubstantiated claims just as outrageous as those that come out of Phelps' church.

There are many Christians who do not agree with homosexuality based upon Gods Word, however, these banners that this Phelps fellow is waving around is sad . . . God does not hate homosexuals!

  • Fri Feb 20, 2009 10:31 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

Believe me - I am not a homosexual or Lesbian supporter - however this Phelps fellow is insane but I guess at least he is honest.

  • Fri Feb 20, 2009 10:12 am Agree: 3   Disagree: 0

You know, sometimes I think Fred Phelps might actually be a very shrewd gay advocate. After all, his portrayal of right-wing fanatical gay-hating "Christians" has done more to get the population to sympathize with gays than just about anyone else.
