Americans Pick Obama as Personal Hero; Jesus Comes Second

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

President Barack Obama’s popularity overwhelms that of Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, and Mother Teresa, according to a new poll that shows Obama as the person Americans named as their hero.

American adults (age 18 and over) spontaneously named President Obama as the person they admire enough to call their hero in a Harris Poll that did not provide a list for respondents to choose from.

The Harris Poll, released on Thursday, was conducted on 2,634 U.S. adults between Jan. 12 to 19, 2009 – just ahead of President Obama’s inauguration.

“The fact that President Obama is mentioned more often than Jesus Christ should not be misinterpreted,” The Harris Poll clarified in its report. “No list was used and nobody was asked to choose between them.”

Following Barack Obama, the next most popular personal heroes are Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Abraham Lincoln, John McCain, John F. Kennedy, Chesley Sullenberger, and Mother Teresa, respectively, to round out the top 10 people Americans say they admire and would call their hero.

In the top 20 list, God held the No. 11 spot while evangelist Billy Graham tied with former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for the 13th slot.

Respondents gave multiple reasons for their choice of heroes, including: doing what’s right regardless of personal consequences (89 percent); not giving up until the goal is accomplished (83 percent); doing more than what other people expect of them (82 percent); overcoming adversity (81 percent); and staying level-headed in a crisis (81 percent).

Only 14 percent of Americans said they admire either their mother or father enough to call them their hero. In contrast, nearly half (49 percent) said a public figure is someone they admire and consider a personal hero.

The public also named several well-known figures that they no longer consider their hero, which includes Colin Powell, George W. Bush, John McCain, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy. In 2001, Bill Clinton topped the list for a similar survey conducted by Harris Poll.

Among other observations made by the poll’s conductors, six of the top ten heroes are dead (including Jesus Christ); the top 10 list includes five presidents; and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ranks higher in the 2009 list (No. 12) than her husband, former President Bill Clinton (No. 16).

Since the 2001 list, several people have dropped off the list completely, including Pope John Paul (was 18th), Jimmy Carter (was 20th), Nelson Mandela (was 21st), Michael Jordan (was 9th), Princess Diana (was 16th), and Tiger Woods (was 23rd).

I would not every call Jesus my hero. He is my Lord, my Savior--much more than what I think of as a hero. I do fear for my country where a person such as obama is called a hero and people like bill clinton and ted kennedy are respected. There's something very wrong with that.

On that note. Here are othes who mocked God (from Snopes.com)

    John Lennon (Singer):
"Christianity will end, it will disappear. Today we (Beatles) are more famous than Him" (1966). Lennon was shot six times.

Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil ): said not even God would remove him from Presidency. He got sick a day before being made President, then he died.

Cazuza (Bi-sexual Brazilian composer, singer and poet): he puffed out some smoke into the air and said: "God, that's for you." He died at the age of 32 of AIDS in a horrible manner.

Architect of the Titanic:"Not even God can sink it"

Marilyn Monroe (Actress):"I don't need your Jesus". A week later, she was found dead.

Bon Scott (Singer): "Don't stop me, I'm going down all the way, down the highway to hell". He was found dead, choked by his own vomit.

Excuse me but the President did not die for my sins and be resurrected for my justification. The President is a mere man a sinner by nature and by choice in need of the Savior like us all. You can see how the Country is in the outhouse when they place the President over God the Son in overt and blatant violation of the First Commandment.

Obama a hero? for what? the man just got into office, and has done really nothing yet.
give him a year or more. And see what he does.
And to put Jesus second in anything, it totally wrong. God put Obama in office. And God is number one, look at the 10 commendments.
God is my hero. Not anyone on this earth is for me.

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Quote by Mahatma Gandhi

    Thanks for your plagiarism, becklau.

I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but here are a couple of verses that really seem to apply to you.

    For your edification:

1John 2:9-11 "He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes."

Luk 6:37 - "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:"

There is, of course, the possibility that you are not a Christian, just as Gandhi who said those words you 'quoted'. If not, I implore you to keep examining that Christ you claim to like! I promise you, if you ever do have faith in Christ, and draw near to him, you will begin to love His people too.

After eight years of Bush in the WH and six of those years with republican control of both houses of congress, they about doubled the national debt from 5 T to 10 T. Bush did not veto a single porked budget from the republicans. In the process they ran the once great US into to ground. Obama now has his work cut out for him, he is certainly capable, but its going to be very difficult, but the US will recover eventually as it always had throughout its history when financial panic and economic down turns occured. The end of timers will once again be disappointed by their fanatasy of "the end" .

Why Jesus would not vote for Barack Obama

In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls.
Michelle called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure," and wouldn't supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it?

But that's not why Obama's opponent Alan Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn't vote for him.

Obama recalled Keyes' statement in a recent USA Today opinion piece but omitted his reasoning.

Steve: You make a good point, heroes do come and go. But most people (and likely most of those polled) are not disecting the word as you have done. They were / are expressing what they most aspire to be, the qualities they most value and admire. Again I say that used to be Jesus for many people. Now that's no longer true. Again I say, this is predicted in the Bile which says there will be a great falling away from Jesus Christ in the last days.

"Can anyone tell me what makes this man a hero?"

In many parts of society it's bad form to look up to Jesus. When America ran Jesus out of the public square it created a vacuum. Most starving people will eat anything.

The ONLY solution is for the Church in America to straighten itself out and DO what the Bible says.

Thanks pammie, here's how I see it. Heroes come and go, they rise they fall, they are heroes because they are men and women with feet of clay, when we look at them and think about ourselves we feel inspired that maybe we can overcome our short comings to be our very best. If the majority of people chose Jesus in 2001 I would wonder who that Jesus was, the more "that" Jesus slides down the poll the better.

  • Mon Feb 23, 2009 3:36 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 2

Steve: There is no denying that there is a slow and subtle shift away from Jesus - it's foretold in the Bible so it shoud come as no surprise to anyone. The sad part is that many people will not notice the change. Then one day Jesus returns to find them fallen away. It's all in the Bible.

That explains why people overwhelmingly chose Jesus in this same poll in 2001. WHAT ELSE ACCOUNTS FOR THE CHANGE? Just look in the Bible. The time is coming when a majority of Americans will negate the name of Jesus entirely. It will happen slowly and subtly, but it will happen.

    RE: frogs in boiling water:

The story's origins are rooted in nineteenth-century physiological literature. An article co-written by G. Stanley Hall from 1887 indicates that many experiments were performed on frogs in the 1870s and 1880s for the purposes of determining how reactive their nervous systems were to various types of stimuli, with temperature change being one of these.[7] One source from 1897 lists an experiment done in 1882 at Johns Hopkins as evidence that "a live frog can actually be boiled without a movement if the water is heated slowly enough; in one experiment the temperature was raised at a rate of 0.002°C. per second, and the frog was found dead at the end of 2½ hours without having moved."[8]

Re the frog, sorry but that is incorrect, it's one of those urban myths people love to quote but most of the time people don't bother to check to see if it true, they just accept it by faith.

Your comments are a perfect example of our narrow earthly thinking.

I trust that Obama will not stand before the Lord one day and say that his shining moment was becoming the President of the United States.

He will hopefully be thankful that God granted him to guide a nation that is supposed to be One under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

Don't be surprised. Jesus comes in second in most churches these day's anyways. Most of the time the Church name and pastor comes first, then maybe some secret rapture story, then some anti-christ story, then some nation of Israel and some where after all of that you may get something about Jesus.

It is not new that Jesus is given inferior position compared to human. And Jesus cannot be given the honour of a mere hero, is true. He is much more than that-He is the very Life of every one. The polls such as this is sheer publicity stunt to be ignored

God is allowing Obama to have his "15 minutes of fame".

But in comparison to eternity, it's pretty much a "drop in the bucket"

The real question is whether Obama will have a place in Heaven after Christ returns to take us all home.
