NY City Megachurch Pastor Resigns 2 Months After Installation

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

A renowned New York City megachurch officially accepted the resignation of their senior pastor Thursday less than two months after they installed him.

This photo taken in early 2009 and provided by The Riverside Church shows Rev. Brad Braxton in the church's sanctuary in New York. Braxton, who has been attacked for his $600,000-plus salary package, submitted his resignation Monday, June 29, 2009 after only eight months in the job.

“It is with sadness and understanding that the Church Council accepts the resignation of the Rev. Dr. Brad Braxton as Senior Minister of the Riverside Church,” wrote Church Council Chair Jean L. Schmidt in a statement Thursday.

“Dr. Braxton's decision to step down has illuminated the need for our Church community to gain clarity on our shared mission, and the Church Council is looking forward to engaging with the congregation in the deep soul-searching and conversations that will allow us to move forward as a stronger, more unified congregation,” Schmidt added.

It was only last year, in August, that a search committee announced its recommendation of Braxton as Riverside’s next senior minister following the retirement of their pastor of 18 years, James A. Forbes.

Braxton, a progressive Christian, seemed a good match for the church famously known for being “a stronghold of activism and political debate throughout its 75-year history,” as the New York Times put it.

“I believe that we are called to seek social justice in this world and that there are two ways we can do this: we can do it with deeds, and we can do it with creeds,” noted Braxton in his resignation letter dated for Monday. “My entire career has been marked with both kinds of social justice work. As a pastor, I have implemented programs that serve marginalized communities. As a biblical scholar, I have analyzed the scripture to reveal how traditional interpretations of the Bible have led to those communities being marginalized in the first place.”

But not all were pleased with the selection, with some complaining that Braxton was moving Riverside away from its tradition of interracial progressivism and toward a conservative style of religious practice. A group of dissident congregants even went to the State Supreme Court in Manhattan to block Braxton’s installation ceremony in April, despite his election in September by an overwhelming margin.

Adding to the fire was knowledge of his pay package, which exceeded $600,000 a year – including a $250,000 salary and a housing allowance. Notably, however, for a church with 2,700 members, Braxton’s compensation was not so out of the ballpark.

In his resignation letter, Braxton said the ongoing struggles in the church over his election and installation “created a level of antagonism within the congregation that undermines the community’s efforts to embody harmony in the name of Jesus Christ.”

“The consistent discord has made it virtually impossible to establish a fruitful covenant between the congregation and me that facilitates the flourishing of the congregation, the broader community, and my family,” he noted.

And so, after considerable prayer and reflection, Braxton concluded that his resignation as senior pastor would be the right thing to do for the congregation, his family, and for himself at this time.

In closing, Braxton encouraged the members of Riverside to strive diligently to heal the longstanding divisions within the congregation and said his hope is that the congregation will be able to address its internal tensions so that the church, along with a new senior minister, will be able to move forward in unity.

Schmidt also expressed the same sentiments in announcing the church’s acceptance of Braxton’s resignation.

“I hope you will join me and the other Council members in wishing Brad, Lazetta and Karis the best for their journey. And I ask you to participate with the Church Council, the staff, clergy, and commissions as we enter a period of reflection, transition, and renewal,” Schmidt concluded.

This is unfortunate. If progressives thought he was too conservative and you conservatives think he is too progressive, then he is probably a pretty Godly man.

I think most of you are missing the point of my note, this is not about me and being laid off , it does not matter how much the church gives or does not give to missions etc. it is ungodly for a Pastor to earn $600,000 plus royalties, plus honoraria for outside speaking services, it grows to a grand total of probably $1Mill per year, if we demand that the CEO's of AIG, Citi Bank, GM etc. list their salaries because of taxpayer bailouts what about CEO's (Pastors) and CEO's of 501 3c's that are tax exempt, and run on "public" funds why should they not divulge salaries and perks, people this is God's money, tithes and offerings of God's people, it is a disgrace, and God will not allow it to continue for much longer, in Jesus Name I believe it.

If it's not about sex, then it's about money. If it's not the money, then it's the drugs. Money tends to bring one down. Sad to say, the majority in the Kingdom don't know how to handle riches.

1SOG3, and that's why I said I felt you were both right and wrong in your initial post, but I think we need to be careful to not assume simply because someone pastors a mega-church that it's all about him or because someone doesn't pastor a mega-church they're not out for themselves since neither one are true statements.

Believer. I certainly don't think all rich people are bad. Clearly all of our lives are better due to people starting businesses, creating new inventions, creating jobs, raising living standards, and they deserve to reap the rewards of their labor. I am saying that these sycophant "pastors" who amass great wealth in the name of God are repulsive. They pervert the entire message of Jesus Christ and I'm sure there is a special place in hell for them. You don't have to look to far in the word to understand tithing is your duty to god for his use, not for some "skin in a suit" to live like Nero! Megachurchs for the most part (Olstein, Jakes, Wright, and many others)are nothing more than a profit center using God as their scheme to amass wealth. I'm sure these motivational speakers will suffer for their corrupting of the WORD. Keep sending them your money for breast augmentations, limos, mansions, hair transplants, and the like if you want. God's leaders DO NOT LIVE LIKE KINGS HERE ON EARTH, PERIOD.

I think msnchris had the best one:
"$600,000????? Talk about the GREAT COMMISSION!!!"

I'm going to laugh myself to sleep on that one! G'night, all.

aussie, I agree to a point, but it would be unfair to make that judgement until we see how much that church gives to missions and other ministries as well as their assistance to the poor. But I've got to admit $600,000 is an awful lot of money!

1SOG3, You're both right and wrong, while there are many wealthy people who appear to be corrupt there are many wealthy people who are totally unselfish with sharing their wealth. One example I'm told was J.C. Penney who was none for giving to many Christian mission causes.

How many more missionaries could be funded for $600,000 a year, or evangelists in the local area. That kind of pay packet is obscene.

How can there be people starving to death and at the same time be a preacher who is a multi-millionaire? By preaching does he become immune to root of all evil? Is he given a larger needle to pass through? Does he justify it as a blessing from god? As if god wanted him to be rich, live in a mansion, wear the best clothes human hands can make, and eat the finest foods, while less godly men are fit to starve. Be careful of your leaders. It seems to me that the finacially richest of us are also the most corrupt, maybe I'm wrong.

frosty, I'm sorry to hear you and the others lost their position, but you make the assumption that all mega-church Pastors treat their staff as you were treated and I'm sure some do but certainly not all do. But if this was the case were you not aware of the disparity in the salaries and if so why did you and other staff stay in the situation. Because I believe if the scenario you're sharing is true and I have no reason to believe it isn't I personally believe God would not honor that ministry and I would not believe He would want me to be a part of it.
As far as what Christ would do, reality is we don't know but God's Word does say we should take care of those who minister in God's name and a worker should be paid based on the work he does. So my opinion is that He would expect those in ministry to be paid a salary that frees them up to focus totally on the ministry God has called them to join Him in accomplishing without needing to be concerned about his and his family's needs being met, but ultimately it's the decision of the local church or Christian organization they work for to make the decision with regards to salaries and I would hope they would indeed make these decisions a serious matter of prayer.

Ok this is why the Mega guys and the TV guys make what they make because when the light shines on the ungodly way that peoples tithes are spent by the the Megas it is turned around to make the the small guy look bad, Oh and by the way along with 30 other people on staff I was laid off and the Mega kept on being a Mega, the church in America deserves what it gets, one of you said "What would Jesus Do" I wonder

Frosty, "I wonder what Jesus would do"

I'm pretty sure He spread the Gospel for free :)

Seriously though, How wonderful it is, and how blessed you are to HAVE a job, and such an important one! 40,000 may seem like small potatoes to you, but please consider this, maybe it will make you a little more thankful for what God HAS given you. :o) My pastor took home 150.00 last week from the church and was thankfull for it. It's all the church can afford after paying the light bill since almost everyone has lost their jobs to lay-offs here. He needs to work two part-time jobs during the week to keep his house and feed his family. I've never once heard him complain, bless his heart. Oh, and he has no associate pastor, he does all the work.

I pray that God blesses you in your ministry Frosty..this post is just meant to give you anothers perspective..

frosty, you know for a fact that is what the other ministry staff at this church only make this much? Plus, does your Pastor and church know how disgruntled you are with regards to your work and salary situation?

  • Mon Jul 06, 2009 8:40 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

So the Senior Pastor like most Megachurch Pastors make six figures $600,000 plus and the associate Pastors that really do all the work like me make $40,000 a year no car, no housing, no free flights, no outside honorariums at about $5,000 to $10,000 a service , maybe the president should look at that, I wonder what Jesus would do

  • Mon Jul 06, 2009 7:42 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

chris, oh please, while there are indeed some priests as there are ministers of other denominations living just above the poverty line there are many priests and above who may have taken a vow of poverty but who drive some very nice cars and get free memberships to some pretty nice country clubs. And while it appears this salary is a bit high, most ministers don't make anywhere near close to this in any denomination.

  • Mon Jul 06, 2009 12:48 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 2

$600,000????? Talk about the GREAT COMMISSION!!!

    This is so rediculous!

We have twice the members of this church and our Pastor gets $35,000 per year.

Our Pastors should set the example of living just above the poverty line which is like the Apostles. These Materialistic Pastors are a sham!

    "seek social justice"
The problem with any social justice effort is that it must be preceded, first and foremost, by the preaching of the Gospel. There is no justice without Jesus as Savior and King.

$600,000 a year, nice work if you can get it....Make mine a double vicar.

If a pastor cannot preach that Jesus is the only way for salvation, then the responsibility for the strife falls on the shoulders of the "progressive" congregation.

A local church that preaches all ways to God preaches heresy and cannot be salt & light no matter how hard she tries.

The problem is not with the pastor but with the unbiblical & liberal views of the local church leadership at Riverside Church.

One of the devil's greatest weapons is strife. I pray that the body of Christ as a whole and among churches would wake up....the world is watching....and we have to be salt and light....I usually am not so bold but I feel such a Righeous anger....we must be the people of love and unity....if we are not then why should the world want to be like us.....I pray that this church would submit to the authority given to them as long as the leadership is teaching the word of God and being led by the Spirit.....submit or find somewhere you can submit...there is no neutral ground.
