Paula White Returns to Lead Ailing Megachurch

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

Charismatic preacher Paula White is stepping in as senior pastor of the Florida megachurch that she and her now ex-husband founded nearly two decades ago.

Paula White shares with audience at the 2007 Life By Design Conference.

On Sunday, White was expected to officially mark the start of a new chapter in the history of Without Walls International Church, which once attracted 23,000 worshippers and was heralded as one of the nation’s fastest-growing congregations.

“It will be my first Sunday to officially preach and to minister to you as the mandate and the mantle that I’ve received for the great assignment for this city, for this ministry, and for our lives collectively as your new senior pastor,” White reported in an eBlast to the Tampa-based congregation.

Since her divorce from Bishop Randy White in 2007, White has been ministering in New York, Texas, and abroad, making only periodic visits to Without Walls.

The church, meanwhile, has shrunk drastically and found itself having faced foreclosure, with their bank demanding immediate repayment of a $12 million loan on the property last November.

Though the church and its lender, the Calif.-based Evangelical Christian Credit Union, later agreed to a modified loan agreement this past March, Bishop White, as recently as last month, reported that the church was in great need for a “financial blessing.”

“We’re at a very critical juncture in our life right now with the church where we must have financial blessing,” he said on June 23 in urging his congregation to donate.

“God is faithful, and He spoke to me at the beginning of this year and said that 2009 would be our greatest year. And isn’t it like the devil ... to cause confusion, to bring a discouragement just before our biggest breakthrough?” the 51-year-old preacher added.

In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times on Friday, White said he was stepping aside as senior pastor because of health concerns and that he has been in and out of the hospital for much of the last seven months.

"I have some serious health issues right now," the bishop said. "I've had six different doctors say that I had to take the stress, the pressure out of my life."

As a result, Bishop White called up his ex-wife about two months ago to inform her of his health situation and to ask her to consider returning to lead the congregation they once pastored together.

After much prayer and counsel, Paula White decided accept the mandate and mantle of senior pastor of Without Walls International Church and the entire ministry organization, according to Paula White Ministries.

“Pastor Paula is very excited about this wonderful assignment and opportunity from the Lord,” her ministry reported. “We know this is the divine plan of God and that great things are in store!”

As for Bishop White, the ailing minister said he is staying town and will still be connected to Without Walls – just in a different position.

“It’s not something that we’re losing. You’re actually gaining,” he told his congregation last week. “And we’re going to gain momentum as we go forward to build the Kingdom of God.”

On Sunday, Without Walls was expected to honor Bishop White “for the leadership and the legacy and richness that he has brought Without Walls to.”

“And we look forward to our future as God has big things for all of us,” Paula White added.

I am so sorry that we have been such a bad example of what a Minister and a Church should be as an older Pastor who has traveled and ministered with the biggest and the best I have to repent for the Church my generation has handed to the next , this joint Pastoral thing has nothing to do with ministry and everything to do with two salaries and a Megastar lifestyle, what happened to the wives of Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, Lester Sumeral, and a host of others how come God is only using women in this way in the 21st century

This whole thing is a disgrace, it has nothing to do with his health or her calling it has to do with survival, both of them are down the tank and on Sunday they will honor him with a huge "gift" pay off, I am amazed that her mentors Jakes et al allows her to get away with this and make a mockery of the Gospel, they are forgiven but there are consequences to their actions, how are we supposed to tell our children to live clean, honest, integris lives when this our their example, she came to South Africa and made a fool of herself and Megafest a disgraced women coming to Africa to tell us how we should live, Wake up church of Laodicea, I am sorry to say More fool you Tampa.

This is pathetic and certainly not Scriptural. They got divorced for reasons other than allowed, never were reconciled to God because they are unrepentant and then she is given a pastorate? What a circus!

Sin (breaking God's word) and rebellion against God makes people insensitive to others. God is not pleased by the callous attitudes over the demise of others. Remember, your true nature is being expressed when no other human is looking, but God sees the real you before you are even aware of it.

Do you really think that the One and Only Holy God is going to accept us into His Heaven with all the offense, bitterness, pride, and rebellion we hold in our hearts? If he did, we would surely turn it to an eternal hell! The Lord God is calling us all TODAY to repent, turn 180 degrees around and humbly face the fact that we sinned against God and our fellow man.

Ask Him to forgive you. Thank Jesus Christ for dying on the Cross to bear your sin and be the payment for your sin. That same Jesus who died, arose with resurrection power, to destroy the power that sin and death had over us. When you confess that Jesus is your Lord (Owner) and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead you shall be saved. Receive Jesus Christ today while there is still time. Only Jesus Christ can make you fit for God's heaven.

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

34 Let your[a] women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

White - the article said he is ailing. There is nothing wrong with her helping someone she loved at one time. She evidently cares deeply - what kind of Christian turns their back on someone you spent part of your life with. So what if people think she's not biblically correct or there is another reason for her taking the reins - if God is her purpose and direction - nobody should have anything to say - anyway the bible says to love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul and love your neighbor as yourself. She is certainly doing that. PRAISE THE LORD!!! HALLELUJAH!!! GOD BLESS YOU PAULA WHITE - STAY ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!!

Unfortunately, charismatic/pentecostal type churches are long on experience and short on doctrine. This situation could not be more unbiblical. But since so little check and balance exists in these churches, one can get away with almost anything.

God help those poor people who obviously don't know the scriptures. And God help the Whites who both desperately need to be in counseling.

This is celebrity Christianity, not true Christianity. And it couldn't look worse to the world.

I just watched the E-Blast video on the WOW website and Paula says she can see into the future and it looks really good. I am so thankful that I can turn to the pages of Scripture to find God's answer concerning this.

    Scripture says,
"Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed." Jeremiah 14:14-15.

"How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal." Jeremiah 23:26-27.

bujo, women not having spiritual headship over men in the home or the local church has nothing to do with women being lesser then men. This was God's plan since the beginning of creation. One person wrote that God did not create women from the bone of a man's foot so she would be under him or a bone from his head that she would be over him, but rather He created her from a bone from his side so they would walk with each other side by side. God's design for man to be the spiritual head of the home was not so man could lord over women and in fact God's Word challenges men to love their wives as Christ loves the Church and gave His life for the Church. Plus, in the local church with the exception of Senior Pastor and Elder there are very few roles that a woman cannot hold in the local church that would not in any way violate the spiritual headship issue. But at the same time I have seen Christian men and churches use this teaching as a means to "keep women in their place" by totally misusing this teaching from God's Word.

  • Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:07 am Agree: 7   Disagree: 1

Why should women not teach or have authority over men? Because Adam was created first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived. God created Adam first and then created Eve to be a helper for Adam. This order of creation has universal application in the family (Ephesians 5:22-33) and the church. The fact that Eve was deceived is also given as a reason for women not serving as pastors or having spiritual authority over men. This leads some to believe that women should not teach because they are more easily deceived. That concept is debatable, but if women are more easily deceived, why should they be allowed to teach children (who are easily deceived) and other women (who are supposedly more easily deceived)? That is not what the text says. Women are not to teach men or have spiritual authority over men because Eve was deceived. As a result, God has given men the primary teaching authority in the church.

Many women excel in gifts of hospitality, mercy, teaching, and helps. Much of the ministry of the local church depends on women. Women in the church are not restricted from public praying or prophesying (1 Corinthians 11:5), only from having spiritual teaching authority over men. The Bible nowhere restricts women from exercising the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12). Women, just as much as men, are called to minister to others, to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), and to proclaim the gospel to the lost (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 3:15).

God has ordained that only men are to serve in positions of spiritual teaching authority in the church. This is not because men are necessarily better teachers, or because women are inferior or less intelligent (which is not the case). It is simply the way God designed the church to function. Men are to set the example in spiritual leadership, in their lives and through their words. Women are to take a less authoritative role. Women are encouraged to teach other women (Titus 2:3-5). The Bible also does not restrict women from teaching children. The only activity women are restricted from is teaching men or having spiritual authority over them. This logically would preclude women from serving as pastors/preachers. This does not make women less important, by any means, but rather gives them a ministry focus more in agreement with Gods plan and His gifting of them.

    Nolalady,
I must say, that is quite an assumption on your part! Nowhere in my comment did I limit these types of behaviors to charismatic churches. These problems are evident in many denominational churches as well, but with far less frequency. You should read John MacArthurs book called "Charismatic Chaos" if you haven't already done so. You will be able to see more clearly what I'm talking about. I have worked with Paula White on one project before, and I've seen that ministry's demise over the last few years. In my opinion, it is because of their refusal to operate under strict biblical standards. They are deceiving themselves by following these supposed 'words from God,' when the words in question clearly violate scripture. I wonder whose 'words' they are actually following? Many (not all) of these types of churches forsake the doctrine of sola scriptura and embrace theologies rooted solely in emotion and experience. Their extra-Biblical teachings are leading many astray, and It is sad. My prayer is that they come to a place of sincere repentance and strive wholeheartedly to line up with the church model given to us in 1 Timothy.

this is the very reason that souls are not being saved and nurtured. The Bible is absolutely against Women Preachers and without question FORBIDS Women to be a Pastor or Bishop, as a matter of fact the Woman is not even to have any part of the Business of the Church. Women are told to keep silence in The Church and to ask her Husband when she needs to know anything about the running of the Church. I am sorry if this offends anyone but how do we call ourselves Christians if we don't follow the TEACHINGS of God, I know the Bible tells us that God is not the Author of confusion and this a point of contention from its earliest beginnings.God had 12 disciples and not one was a WOMAN, that should put an end to this deception once and for all. This would be the case if church members would do as the Bible instructs and search the scriptures and stop following the False TEACHERS and Preachers.

I can't understand how people would want to sit under this kind of leadership.

How are they any different from the millions of others (inside and outside the church) who divorce 'just because...'

God doesn't say we can divorce because you (or the spouse) think their "lives are going in different directions."

Why should this congregation want either of them back in a leadership position?

  • Sun Jul 12, 2009 7:11 pm Agree: 10   Disagree: 2

I really have to question these Pastors and the leadership involved in the church. In our church, a divorce involving a Pastor requires that the Pastor be removed from his position as their leadership by example becomes highly questionable and it is almost impossible to pastor others while going through the turmoil and pain of divorce.

After all, divorce is not supposed to be an option for any follower of Christ, let alone a Pastor. The fact that these 2 "Pastors" divorced 2 years ago, and he still remained a "Bishop" and Senior Pastor of this church until now, and the fact he called her to come and take over for him is quite absurd!

With $12M in debt, his constant "health issues" over the last 7 months and these "Pastors" switching leadership between each other instead of bringing in fresh leadership makes one consider what they may be trying to hide. I wonder what is God really trying to tell them through these circumstances?

My prayers are with them and their congregation, but I also pray for the truth to be revealed.

  • Sun Jul 12, 2009 6:48 pm Agree: 9   Disagree: 1

I always love when these "pastors" claim they talked to God and that "God" told them they needed to give money to their church. How in the world does a congregation rack up a $12 million deficit that they can't pay back?!? I know many churches that have overcome debt, but to get yourself in $12 million deep? It sounds a little too suspicious to me. Shame on these people for screwing the congregation out of their hard earned money and claiming the need for $$$ came from God!
